Was bored and reading about African countries and just ran across that. Anybody know of other countries that had legal slavery later than that?

quote:

Slavery in Ethiopia existed for centuries. The practice formed an integral part of Ethiopian society, from its earliest days and ended in 1936 and 1942. Slaves were traditionally drawn from the Nilotic groups inhabiting Ethiopia's southern hinterland as well as Omotic groups.[1] War captives were another source of slaves, though the perception, treatment and duties of these prisoners was markedly different.[2] Although religious law banned Christian slave masters from taking part in the slave trade, many Muslim Oromo slave traders took part in the Arab slave trade. Slaves usually served as concubines, bodyguards, servants and treasurers.[3]

Can’t say I knew that

Slavery is evil. Slavery of a specific race is both evil and racist.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Small numbers, but admittedly very late in getting rid of the vileness. However, the vast majority of African slaves (in the millions) sent to the “New World” were imported to Brazil which did not ban slavery until 1892.

Per Wikipedia

Mauritania was the last country to abolish slavery, with a presidential decree in 1981.

Wakanda made us all a slave to admiration of them recently.

If it's any comfort, I got that reference without Googling. No one else will, though.

Don't forget the Greater Antilles islands. Somebody had to make that sugar cane money.

Sorry Mr. I-Get-Arcane-References Guy, but it's an old joke. It's used in an episode of MASH.

There were a lot of slaves freed in 1936

quote:

During Italian rule, the occupation government issued two laws in October 1935 and in April 1936 which theoretically freed 420,000 people.

Wow -

quote:

In 1981, Mauritania became the last country in the world to abolish slavery,[3] when a presidential decree abolished the practice. However, no criminal laws were passed to enforce the ban.[3][4][5] In 2007, "under international pressure", the government passed a law allowing slaveholders to be prosecuted.[3] Despite this, the number of slaves in the country has been estimated by Global Slavery Index to be 43,000 (or 1.058% of the population) in 2015[6] and by the organization SOS Slavery to be up to 600,000

I have a friend whose dad was very high up in the Ethiopian military. Like one of the top officials. She had over 30 Somalian servants in their household growing up. They were essentially slaves from how she describes them. They didn’t get paid a dime. Just food and living quarters. This was in the 80s/90s

While Sudan may not have had it legal, they were enslaving people until the war ended in 2005

Families still sell their daughters for cattle in some areas.

They still practice female genital mutilation.
