Other than how it annoys me to hear about it I really don’t care that slavery happened.

A Bible from the 1800s, intended to “educate” slaves, cut every passage that white overlords thought might incite rebellion. They had to cut 90% of the OT, 50% of the NT. Reveals how much they understood the Bible to be about revolution.

I find this fascinating.
Indeed.
Even more so when so many Planters cited scripture as supportive of slavery.

Could be as simple as someone needed toilet paper.

Slavery was just a part of life during biblical times. A lot of people chose to be slaves in order to have shelter and food. It’s a myth that all slaves were treated poorly, in fact a lot of them were treated well because they were considered poperty and most people take care of their property.

the Bible actually dissuades slavery?

I don't think it is that. It promotes free thinking and not bending your knee to an earthly king or master. Therefore no man has dominion or authority over you.

I thought the Bible supported slavery

It does

If that is the case then why did they feel the need to do this?

Have you read the Bible? It’s full of ambiguity and contradiction, just like people.

Why? Because (and here's my favorite) "The Lord works in mysterious ways" and "We can't understand His Plan".

If there is a God (Christianity), why were slaves punished (during this time period)?

Because the Bible gives explicit instructions on how to beat your slaves.

Even in the Old Testament, chattel slavery as we had in the colonies was pretty frowned upon. and even then, they had to free them after 6 or 7 years.

Demonstrably false. The Bible literally has rules for passing down slaves to your children.

Slavery is evil, end of story. The fact that the Bible does not condemn it in all forms tells me all I need to know.

"Slavery" wasn't the issue in NT writings. Paul wasn't saying slavery was ok, he was addressing each persons behaviors within their situations. Slavery was a cultural/social issue of the times. It never states slavery to be right or wrong. As times and social awareness progressed, we did away with it.
An OT law says its ok to sell ones child to pay off a debt, obviously.... it's not something we practice today based on OT writing, again.... a cultural/social issue.

The “why” is because of the total depravity of man, there are no good people.

God operates on a different plane from you and me. You/I see 80 years. He sees eternity. You/I see bodily pain, he sees death of spirit and soul. You/I worry about the past and future as we dwell in the present. For God, the past, present and future are all right now. we are flesh and God is spirit. We constantly seek the easy path, which is usually the wrong path (hurting ourselves and others) while God lives in perfect holiness. There is no variance from the way He is.

He understands the only impact we can have is the right now - the past is gone and the future is not guaranteed. In our human condition we, (without much thinking) screw up the one thing we can control, and worry about the two things we can't control at all.

And He loves us. We are his creation and (at creation) He provided a way for us to be declared Justified and righteous, not on the basis of the flawed condition we exist in but from what he is and has willingly done for his creation. In the beginning was the Word (logos) and the word was with God and the word was God … and the word became flesh.

Hell, the Catholic clergy decided what books go in and what books stay out of the Bible at the Council of Nicea. How is this any different? The Bible was created by the Catholic Church out of whole cloth and has been redacted throughout the centuries.

Well if we knew that we could just take over Gods job. As humans are knowledge is finite. If in our finite knowledge we could fully understand God, then he isn’t much of a god.

Great question. Bible answers this in John.

John 1:12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
