This is why Europeans give us shite for "not traveling," when they can drive clear across their country in a couple of hours. They don't realize a) how big we are and b) how varied and diverse our country is.

People have no idea how big America is because of our typical use of Mercator projection. Driving in a straight line from south Florida to northern Minnesota is like driving from Jordan in the middle east to northern Latvia in the Baltics.

The whole "other countries do it this way and better" argument, especially around healthcare, has always been retarded... like most of Europe countries have a population about equal to Houston... and the biggest ones get up around New York.

That and we spend on military where they don't.

Australia is crazy to me. Basically comparable to driving from Kentucky to Nevada through a giant desert.

The OP's visuals right here are evidence enough as to why we don't have high speed rail here.

I'm a huge rail advocate but the revenue per mile in areas outside of the NEC, Florida, West Coast, TX Triangle, Chicagoland, and maybe the Piedmont corridor (ATL-CLT) just ain't there.

The population density of Europe is insane compared to what we have here.

Our military spending frees up their resources for nice things like universal health care. They also do not have as many professionals making enormous salaries as we do....doctors and lawyers in Germany make a little more than a skilled tradesman and doctors are required by law to practice in hospitals and even in ambulances for a LONG time before they can hang out their own shingle and start making anything close to what a US based doctor makes.
