New to tornado nomenclature. What does this mean?

Does that mean Dorothy finally started working?

Sigh of relief there. Does look like it took a big gulp of outflow cooled air, just in time.

That’s how high up a sensor on the ground was thrown into the air by the tornado

I went to KC in March in each of the last 4 years for work

glad to see the tornado lifted in time

Did the tornado hit East Lawrence? If not, that’s a lot of fortune for a tornado to miss Lawrence to the south and KC metro to the north.

It sounds like the outskirts of Lawrence got some damage. There is a little town of about 400 people called Linwood about halfway between Lawrence and Kansas City. It sounds like they took a direct hit. Kansas City reporter was crying as she pulled into Linwood.

I get it that it went up a little over 5 miles, but what does that mean below? That the whole thing jumped up high or that this is just a tremendous tornado.
I guess my question should have been what does this mean for those on the ground?

Mean it was likely a strong tornado at that point. Also very strong updraft to pull it up that far into the air.

This was around the time when Linwood was getting hit.

Tornadoes are basically big spinning updrafts. The height in the amount of time tells you the updraft was strong, which typically means the winds on the ground were quite strong too.

Just southeast of Lawrence. The police tweeted that there’s no major structural damage within city limits.
