That is insane, no matter how much money you have. Animals don’t understand their own mortality. The humane thing is to put them down when they reach that age with major health problems. True story (I think). A friend of mine related the following: Muffy, the 10 year old family cat took very sick and my friend’ s dad took the cat and the concerned children (all under 12 years old) to the vet to have Muffy diagnosed. The kids had to wait in the car. The vet examined the cat, told dad there was a potential for a full recovery, but the course of treatment involving expensive drugs, surgery, and repeated, time consuming trips to the clinic would cost over $5000. Dad comes out to the car without the cat, opens the door, gets in, looks at all the kids and says: “Bad news. Muffy ain’t gonna make it.”

I’d have spent the 5 grand in that situation without a blink.
