Shrimpers Might go on strike

Basically upset about low prices due to foreign competition.
In some ways, I get their frustration, but part of this problem is of their own doing.
I know two commercial shrimpers. From time to time, they will catch more than the can sell to the wholesalers, so they will call me (along with others we know) to see if we want some. It's a "do you want some, come here in 30 minutes" thing, so we never really know when we will get the call.
They will basically sell us 11-15 count for 3.75 a lb and 16-20 count for 3.25 a lb. And it is insanely fresh. My understanding is that price is a little more than they get from the wholesalers for those sizes.
I've asked both of them, why don't the shrimpers get together and form a market of some sort. Sell for $4-$5 a pound at a dock somewhere. Considering most markets/groceries sell them close to $7 a lb - and it's gone through the distributor and through the store - many people would rather buy direct.
Both of them have told me, they don't because if they don't fill the distributor's orders, they will get cut off by the distributor. They have ceded all power to the distributors.

Because then everything would have to be above the table. They don't want that.

Well that and the exponential increase in risk of spoilage.

This was a big problem after the BP spill. To get compensation, the claims administrators wanted to see financials and proof of claimed revenues, of which the shrimpers had pretty much no financials and no proof.
Which makes me believe that the wholesalers are paying cash as well.

My best friend owns 3 crab boats, and gets paid by check from the distributors

they use all kinds of chemicals on the shite from Bangladesh and Indonesia
I work in seafood/fish distrib world, so i see everything.
Some of the local grocery stores have gone away from the foreign shite, because of the chemicals they use. But, you can't get many of the sizes they want from USA, so they end up getting prawns from Indonesia areas.

They have a market. The shrimp market.
I think you are thinking more along the lines of a cartel. That is illegal in the United States.

Start driving to Grand Isle.
You can easily fill that ice chest. Oh and cash is King and prices are negotiable.

The black market shrimp industry is booming right now. Your friends need to get in on this action.
Tell your friends to go to Dock 32 after 11pm. The password is "Captain Shrimpdick"

Nah. The wholesalers are definitely paying with a check. It’s not that they didn’t have any financials to prove, it’s just that the amount of under the table income was substantial. They can sell direct to the consumer for more than the dock is paying and not have to pay taxes on it. It’s a win win.

And the shrimpers here will change the oil on their diesel motor at sea and throw the old oil overboard
Not to mention all the shite that’s already in our water because of the Mississippi

Don't see an issue with it. Remember the suicide cabbie thread?
