Murrell’s

The original has been closed a while. It was my favorite place to go back to when I went home. It was the perfect old fashioned, all night diner with Green Goddess dressing and pie. Some of those ladies that worked there had probably been there fore 40 years.

It was a fantastic place.

Loved riding the bus to play at Woodlawn in baseball and having the little hooodlums throw rocks at our bus on the way to the field. Good times.

Woodlawn was not quite totally hood when I played. Southwood neither, but none of those South Shreveport schools had no fences around their baseball fields.

Green Oaks didn't either, their outfielders had to be in great shape.

Another Shreve graduate here.

I never realized there were so many of us on TD.

Perhaps I failed to mention that I too am a Gator.

Chicken, can we get a Captain Shreve board?

Is this whole thread full of Gators?

I'm a Caddo Magnet grad but would have been zoned to Shreve. Lots of friends went there

My dad plays golf at Querbes 3x a week. And he still eats at the Cub.

The first house we owned was right by Querbes in Broadmoor. I loved Broadmoor in the 80s.

Crazy times when they let teens grow up normally. Not unusual to meet after school in the bar.

It was a lot easier to get into a bar as a 17 year old when the drinking age was 18.

Not here either. I was in the country on the other side of Lake Bistineau.

A few people mentioned Dr. Blood's at the State Fair. Those guys always followed me around and scared me to death.

Anybody remember the free show at the State Fair?

I saw Alabama before they were big stars. I also saw Donny and Marie at the free show. I know there were others.

KWKH had a free, listener appreciation show back then. I wasn't living there anymore, but by parents saw Garth Brooks right as he was becoming popular.

All I could afford after blowing all my middle school money on Stripper in the arcade.

What about going to the fair and hearing a PA announcement to meet your party in front of the grandstand?

You had mentioned the hs baseball fields not having fences, when I was in hs no Caddo Parish hs baseball field had a fence, and most fields except Woodlawn’s was like playing in an IED test area, we were big time to get to play in Bossier Parish, Centenary, or the old SPAR Stadium with fences

At one of the state fairs, I recall they had a celebrity guest, Ken Curtis (Festus of 'Gunsmoke') who was going to be making an appearance that evening. I so wanted to stay and see Festus. But I was a kid, and my parents were more than ready to leave. They hated fairs to begin with, and would only indulge us so much.

We had to take a tiller to the infield every year and burn off the grass, but we did have a fence. I think it was only 315 down the lines.

I owned Shreveport sports trivia in the late 70s and early 80 call in shows. Never paid for sporting events.

I remember playing the Easter tournament, or whatever it was called, at Walbrook one year, always seemed to rain during that tournament, they were sanding the baselines and pouring gasoline on them and lighting it trying to burn off the water I hit one over the green monster off Jamie Harris my senior year
