LSU, Willis Knighton North and Pierremont have no water. LSU and Highland have no heat.

This is all Greg Abbott's fault.

Seems like a few days of below freezing temps shouldnt completely shut down your society?

Something's wrong here. Not like it's the first time North La has seen an extended cold snap...

That's terrible, though.

a few days of in the 20s wouldn't have done anything

getting down to 1 will frick up a water system not prepared for such temps though

the intake at our water supply froze shut, which fricked up the pumps, and several major water mains busted due to temps getting close to 0

I operated Wednesday morning (obviously not elective) - very little difference as far as how the case went, waterless hand scrubs are the standard - sterile water for irrigation is of course bottled, but general patient care is like nothing I've ever seen in 25 years of practice, but staff that was there was all-in and doing a fantastic job. Fire dept came and delivered some water to run boilers. Hygiene issues for patients are difficult to say the least. Waiting on some theater based water delivery systems from military when roads are passable (something called a HIPPO that can be deployed where there is no source of potable water). They are saying likely Saturday before water main breeches are fixed. Much of the city (including me) in the same boat.

The frost line for Louisiana to bury water pipe is 8"-10". That's based on winter temperature averages. A hard freeze for multiple days will freeze earth up to 24". How hard is it for some to understand that is unprecedented for our part of the country?

Well, it's the general direction the city is going anyway

I still have water. Its not enough pressure to flush a toilet and take a shower, but we can still fill pots.

Which might be important, since we only have enough water bottles for today, and I have no idea if I'll be able to find any water tomorrow.

Hospitals are to be held to a higher standard due to the nature of their services. Four in one city is unprecedented. How hard is that for you to understand.

The only traffic I'm seeing on my street is my nurse neighbors slip-sliding to work. They are committed.

Our shitty little town can't keep the lights on during a summer thundershower, and Laura took us off the grid for 9 days, so I was expecting the worst . But we've been fine other than low water pressure last night, which is back to normal today.

We had very low pressure when I went to bed Tues (not enough to shower), but I still had hot and cold from every tap in my house. None when I got up around 0400 Wed. I had started boiling what I was letting from from taps in big stock pots Tue night. Got about 5 gal for brushing teeth, face washing, etc. I had filled all of my car wash buckets earlier in the weekend for toilet flushing. I've got fluids to last the four of us through Sat with rationing.

You're right, a few days of below freezing temps should never do that but when a southern area of the country gets to 0-5 degrees one or two nights then only in the teens and twenties for a few days in a row afterwards, yes, that will frick that area up.

Except that it is not unprecedented. Same kind of weather happened in the mid 80's when I was at LaTech. Even heavier snow/ice though, was roughly half again as thick. Shutdown all of North La for at least 10 days with sub freezing temps.

Since I was used to snow/ice being from Memphis and Tulsa, I was the designated driver for the crowd I hung with. Would pack my little rear wheel drive Chrysler made by Mitsubishi with up to 10 people at a time and make runs to different locations to party. Back and forth to liquor stores, grocery stores, apartments/houses, campus dorms, getting people together for some truly wild times.

Not nearly as much in the news back then about power outages, water issues, etc.. Since it wasn't reported and no internet back then to document it, be hard to say whether it happened same/more/less. No reports of the hospitals in either S'port or Funroe having issues though.

We do get snow/ice fairly often, and we often lost power for days in the country. But the water system issues this time are due to the low temps, which are way colder than usual.

Temps in the teens are rare here, and usually don't last but a few hours. The prolonged single digit and teen temps this time were quite rare.

I'm 52 and save the few stints away from this area during education and training have lived here all of my life - this is unprecedented here. Lowest temps in 90 years, and two systems right on top of each other. Society isn't shut down, and its not even as bad as what I'm seeing on the news in Dallas and Houston, but there are certainly some hardships. Despite the fact that the several of the hospitals have no flowing city water, at least the one where my practice is based is doing a good job managing and taking care of folks in the face of this.

ETA: remarkably very little effect on electric power here, relatively small number of outages for any appreciable time - not sure who credit goes to there or if it is just luck, but that has definitely been a saving grace.
