Try to find a used ice therapy machine. Breg polar ice machine is the one I used and it helped a lot with the pain

Well this doesn't sound fun. I've got impingement and a slap tear and need surgery. Been pushing it off for several years due to young children. Don't want to be useless for so many months.

Do what they call "Stay Ahead of the Pain". After the surgery take the pain pills because you will need them.
Also, like others have said follow all the doctors orders and do the physical therapy completely. PT is the most important after surgery activity that will get you back in the saddle.

Had this in March. Make sure you get nerve block with anesthesia. Shoulder ice pack is life saver. Wore it to bed. Bought off Amazon and some extra gel packs for it. It helped me more than any pain medication

I put mine off for year and it finally got so bad the pain was unreal. My pain 3-4 days after surgery was an improvement of what I had been having the 2-3 weeks prior. I wouldn’t put off. I was able to go back to work in week with my sling on.

First two responses are on point.

I will add: sweat pants are your friend. Going to the bathroom by yourself is impossible otherwise.

Also, after about 10 days, when you think you feel better, you will try to open or close a car door and be painfully reminded that it is too soon.

Take the PT and home stretches seriously and you’ll be fine.

Any of you guys ever had shoulder surgery?

4 x here.

I have a torn labrum, rotator cuff tear, and possible bicep tear. Having surgery Tuesday.

I've torn my rotator cuff and rhomboid muscle. I've also had anchors inserted into my shoulder joint area to keep my shoulder from popping out. Lastly, I've also had a distal clavicle excision.

Any information and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I hope surgery is beneficial for you. I still, from time to time, hurt like hell --- where it feels like the back of my shoulder blade area is on fire.

All this..and hopefully you have someone at home to help you the first few weeks after surgery..Little things you don't think about..like cooking, bathroom functions, putting on your clothes, reading a book, opening a beer, putting an album on the turntable, driving, ....etc...

I don't want to ever go through that again..good luck..

Yes. It sucks. Recovery for me was slow and painful. The best therapy tool I had were those PT rubber bands. I would hook them to door knobs and a dozen other things to get mobility and strength back. Took me about a year to feel back to normal.

I hope your experience is better.

Ditto on all the previous mentions of:

One of the worse surgeries ever

Doing your rehab is very important

Cold therapy machine is worth the $200 I spent. Made the pain a lot more bearable first 2 weeks.

You are sleeping in a recliner for 2 to 4 weeks.

Don't overdo it coming back--easy to re-tear stuff.

If the surgery is on your dominant hand, get used to using the other hand. Hardest thing for me was butt wiping and mouse clicking. I ended up with a urinary tract infection because I wasn't doing a good job wiping so think of using a bidet, handheld shower attachment, baby wipes or a really good friend to wipe your butt. And if you are over 50, you will throw like a girl for the rest of your life.

One benefit from the surgery is that I'm pretty much ambidextrous now (except for the butt wiping and mouse clicking). And the left-handed self-pleasuring for 2 months was like having a mistress.

If you think you’re go to go before the doc says so, it’s not true. Trust me. My labrum still hurts and when I play golf it’s terrible the next day.

Or if I sleep on it wrong.

I pushed my surgery off for 3 years and was in the gym constantly, now I have 0 strength on that shoulder (dominant).

Thank everyone for the advice. I have the recliner, been using my non-dominant hand for the past two weeks in preparation, set up for the nerve block, ordering the ice machine, and will follow doctor/PT orders fully. Btw, I'm scheduled for PT 2 days after surgery.

Try to keep all distractions and abrupt noises down if you have kids/ pets in the house while you’re resting, napping, or sleeping. The biggest problem I had was jerking awake and that shuddering feeling. Might have been the pain pills though. Take a Benadryl with pain pill for the first week at night..

Had my right shoulder destroyed back in 1984. Complete separation and dislocation with no chance to reconstruct the joint cavity.

I have essentially a sling made up of surgical latex tape that holds the ball joint in place. Looks freaky in x-rays.

I remember recovery started out real slow and hurt like hell. Progress was exponential, though, once the pain subsided.

Doctor released me after I told him I had played golf against his orders. He asked how I played. I told him I shot 76, and he told me to enjoy the rest of my life.

Got a cool looking scar.

Pro Tip:

Prior to surgery shave your shoulder all the way to your sternum. The bandages are slapped on with surgical tape and the adhesive melds to any hair. Absolute worst thing about the whole experience was ripping all that off. Worst than the Brazilian bikini waxing you usually get for your Speedo.
