Should texting while driving result in the same penalties as dui?

Studies are coming out that it is just as dangerous to text and drive as to get behind the wheel impaired. I think a $1000 fine would keep people from texting on the roads, but many want stiffer punishment. What say you?

I'm fine with that. Texting is more dangerous than a DUI. When intoxicated at least you still are looking at the road as impaired as you may be, but when texting you're flying blind. Car breaks in front of you, crash.

No, although I'm all for stiff penalties for it.
If you look at a text real quick, obviously you are distracted and not focused on the road but in a split instant you can be back with your eyes on the road and be a model driver. If you're shitfaced you're impaired the entire length of the trip. That's far more callous and dangerous IMO.

Tougher, yes. Same as DUI, no.

The problem is you can't have texting and driving laws. It must be hands free laws or no laws. It's so easy to simply say I wasn't texting and driving I was looking at my gps. On top of that, its irrelevant if its texting and driving or tigerdroppings and driving. Its the same danger.

Penalties should be steeper

at least with DUI intoxication plays a part in your poor decision making. If you make the sober decision to text while driving, penalty should be tougher.

I see this as a slippery slope.

I’ll give them steeper fines if they raise the BAC to something more reasonable.
Otherwise I don’t want to give them any more power l

I fully support making cell phones not function while driving. You can survive not looking at your phone for an hour.
Problem is making them still function for passengers.

I don’t think there should be jail time or anything like that, but definitely harsher penalties.
Imagine if texting while driving resulted in a substantial fine and a required safety driving course.
I’d be ok with that but should probably be increased based on repeat offenses.

Find a way to disable it only when someone is sitting in drivers seat. Not sure how feasible this may be but science should be able to figure this out.

I think everyone should be in jail unless they walk around in bubble wrap 24/7.
MOAR laws!! More jail!!

Yes, sort of.
Going to jail for vehicular homicide due to texting will be a bit more difficult to prove. Just because you just sent a text or received a text doesn't mean you were doing it at the time of the accident. It's not the same as a breathalyzer or blood draw.

$500 fine would suffice. The only problem is that cops will only enforce it when they're trying to pop someone for DWI
