Social Security has turned into classic welfare millennials and genX is keeping it afloat for the Boomers already

I tried to convince my parents to throw 500k @ apple when their stock did the 7-1 split a few years ago.

My mom was so horrified at the thought, like for some reason they thought that money was literally untouchable.

They would be millionaires today and not working.

Obviously yes, we SHOULD be able to and yes you COULD "invest" that money better than SS.

However, the Gov't will never let that happen. If anything, in the coming years they're going after 401K's
i think I remember Bush ran in his first term on overhauling SS and part of the plan was to allow more personal investment

I was young at the time and my first elec Ion voting so this wasn't high on my agenda of things to follow, so I could be wrong

IRA and 401k from two companies here.

Nokia recently switched from match to a pension which pissed me off.

I don't plan on SSec not being solvent in 34 years

Everyone should be allowed to invest some portion of the SS contribution on their own (benefits reduced accordingly).

It'll never happen as the ponzi scheme is too large and backed by the govt.

I'm 37 and would opt out tomorrow if they'd let me. I'd donate everything I already paid to the cause. Let me out and we'll call it even

I am 100% with you there. I will happily let go of every cent to not pay another.

I felt this way when I was 20. I'm 36 now. There is no reason to keep it afloat. No one I know is going to rely on it. Pensions too. Let the people manage their retirement. If they suck, that's on them.

This is why we need Social Security. If you'd guess wrong (and many would), some people would be destitute. Then we'd have elderly people w/ no income. We are not willing as a society to let them die on the street, so we would pay them something anyway.
But the age needs to be increased to at least 70.

They need to raise the age dramatically.

I mean, how much high do you want it raised? You're basically one step into the grave by the time you're eligible as it is.

I'm 36. I'll be shocked if I see it and have been paying into it for well over a decade.
