Should backup sensors/alarms be required instead of cameras on new cars?

Don’t get me wrong, I have a vehicle with a backup camera (also have sensors) and it’s really an awesome feature. That being said, it still doesn’t alert the driver that something is behind you. You have to be looking at the camera to see something is there.
Seems that if accident avoidance is the true goal, sensors/alarms would’ve been the starting point requirement.

frick no. Can you imagine what it would sound like in a Costco parking lot? You'd never know which "I want to speak to your manager" housefrau is about to run you down.
EDIT: Oh, you mean proximity alarms in the cabin for the driver. Yeah. That feature is fricking awesome. I have collision sensors on both sides and directly behind and wish I'd had them years ago. When your only option is pull-in parking and have to back out into traffic, those approaching vehicle sensor are a fricking godsend. They'll pick up approaching vehicles from 30 yards out easy and sound the alarm that I've got approaching traffic and tell me which direction on the gauge cluster. Mine definitely goes off as well if something is within about 10 feet of the rear bumper and the car is in reverse.

I agree but seems like the minimum would’ve been the sensor not the camera.

Proximity Alarms is what I am talking about. It protects the rear and blind spots on both sides of car.

One of my cars is camera and sensor beeps at me.
Other car is just camera.
You can do a bit more with that sensor security to whip that baby around.

We have a hedge that runs down the length of our driveway that you can’t see over in the car. The rear sensor covers a wide enough angle that when the back of the car clears the hedge it picks up the cars/people coming from the other side of the hedge that the camera doesn’t see. It’s been really helpful.

I know of several women at work that have the back up cameras and don't use them
These same women have blue tooth in their cars and still talk with the cell phone in their hands.

Member when automatic seatbelts were required in new cars? I member. They were awful.
Overreach in this area drives up the price of cars and adds “features” that people hate.

Have you ever worked in an industrial site where every damn vehicle backup alarm is screaming, so you tune them out and never hear the one about to hit you?

Isn’t that the issue with most accidents backing up? Not looking?
I have a backup camera and love it because I can see what is directly behind my bumper which I can’t see without a camera, and it gives me a much larger field of vision backing up than does my rear view mirror. Combined with my 2 side mirrors, I eliminate a lot of would be blind spots backing up. I don’t need an alarm because I’m not looking though. I’m looking. Maybe we should just start looking instead.

Neither should be “required” I have driven for 26 years without a camera and proximity sensors.
Pay attention to what you are doing. Operating a motor vehicle is a great privilege with a ton of responsibility.

Why are you backing up without looking

It’s called Nanny-tech as a lot of people don’t want the car to tell them how to drive. That said I have cameras around the car and when I backup I have a 3D view of all sides and its pretty cool. I have the sensors that help sometime on blind spots. I had to turn of the auto stop when traffic comes to a sudden stop though.

Why are you against more safety? If I’m backing up, my car will sense and alert me of cars approaching from way far away on both sides. Cars that I can’t always see because the sensor is at the rear of my car.
It has nothing to do with being a shitty driver.

I always thought how important it is that there isn't lag between the backup camera and screen.

Not instead of cameras but maybe in addition to the camera. Back up cameras should be required on every car, at least every truck/SUV.

they should definitely have cell phone jamming devices for backing up, frickers cant drive as it is so get them off the phone at least when backing up

My point was if the govt was going to require anything it should be the alarm and not the camera.
Having a camera is useless if people don’t use it. The proximity sensor is actually an improvement over just the mirrors bc it can detects things you cannot see using the mirrors and alerts you to it.
