Stabbing in Portland was a Bernie bro, and reports from Fox is that shooter was also a Bernie bro. Bernie reached the fringe outcasts who see life as unfair and who blame others for their problems. Most of the Bernie supporters that I ran in to were either hipster SJWs, young college students or living at home with their parents, or poor people that like the idea of taxing the hell out of the higher income brackets for more government handouts.

Add in older people who believed that they had "worked too hard" for the government not to help them as they aged.
