Bystander said someone was trying to rob a store and cops arrived at the scene and a chase/shootout began

Birmingham has had a rough run lately. They had an officer killed not too long ago.

More than likely, but it is in the middle of downtown; not your typical crime area. Most shots being fired in the B'ham area are typically out in Bessemer, Pratt City, Ensley, etc. areas. In other words, the shitty old neighborhood areas that encircle the bigger downtown area. Of which the city had been doing a good job of cleaning up over the past few years.

Just reported the name of the officer that was shot as officer Cullen Stafford. He will turn 36 tomorrow and It will also be his 9th year anniversary with Birmingham Police Department.
