Gotta tell ya - last few times I’ve been downtown, I haven’t felt real safe. Especially bringing kids. Lady was tweaking bad right outside McWane Center. Two dudes got into a fight at Railroad Park. Multiple bums bothered us while eating outside at Paramount and one got mouthy about my wife when we ignored his request for money. Seems like we went about four-five years of no issues but the past few months have felt like the old days.
To me the biggest problem that isn’t being talked about in Birmingham is the growing homeless population. All of the things you mentioned sound like they were directly from that. Five points has completely gone to shite from it, and yes some of them have gotten more aggressive. It’s always going to be worse in the warmer months, but it’s definitely gotten worse overall in the past year or so.

This is my old stomping ground. I worked 3 blocks over from this and parked everyday after work the street where the suspect died. I went to that YMCA and ran downtown including this area.
It's been said in this thread about homeless. Katrina had an impact on Bham just like other cities. Even more than that, this grocery store exists because those 4 blocks have projects and half way houses. Jessie's Place,The Dannon Project and several religious outreach nonprofits. Im pretty sure Dannon Project is Jeh Jeh Pruitts re-entry facility that houses prison releasees.

Homelessness is growing problem in a lot of big cities. The confluence of the opioid epidemic, slashes to state mental health budgets, and increased housing costs in urban areas have all contributed.

To be honest, for some groups where something like 80% of children are born to single mothers

The LSU pediatric clinic in Shreveport tracks these things. The number for the patients seen by that clinic is 86%. Insane.

Eating outside in European cities is a very pleasant experience.
Currently in Palermo and the bums constantly bother you at dinner.

I can say, since moving to Bham in 2001 I've never gotten a sense of being unsafe when in the downtown area. Maybe I've just been lucky. Sure, I've been approached by panhandlers, but I've been approached by panhandlers in the suburbs so that's not a problem exclusive to Birmingham
Same here. I'll eat outside on the patio at Black Market in 5 points. Never had a problem. I see UAB student women jogging around 5 points all the time.
For its size, BHM doesn't have the homeless problem as other similarly sized cities. Just in my experience.
The big church in 5 points gives free breakfasts to the homeless in the mornings. Lot's of businesses have tried to get them to stop, as it obviously attracts homeless. I personally applaud them for providing for the needy.
