For once it isn’t about teachers or Disney.

Only 20 years??? My dad used to talk about the Baptist kiddie diddling camp that was held in south Texas in the 1950s - he always believed that’s why one of his brothers was gay

Given the size of SBC I have no doubt there is a lot of covered up abuse that needs to come to light and I'm sure some SBC leaders need to be held to account

But the "abuse" campaign is a broad one in SBC, and is being used as a weapon to war against the more conservative elements of the church. Those examples are pretty distinct from the more egregious stuff (like the sex abuse of minors), but nonetheless there are those trying to seize the moment for reasons other than curbing genuine abuse.

Isn’t it odd how we never hear about sex scandals with Jew or Muslim groups? Almost like the media won’t report on those.

Why should you bring two Baptists with you on a fishing trip?

Because if you just bring one he'll drink all your beer

Yet another prime example why so many people are becoming disenchanted with organized religious organizations. Give us your money, cover stuff up, the list has become endless. A lot of people I know don’t even go to church anymore. The most common reason they cite is they feel they can have their own personal relationship with their god without going to a church.

They need to let Baptist preachers marry so this doesn't happen.

How often does the media report on positive things that churches do for the communities?

Just maybe the stories are slanted one way (a negative way).

You should distrust the media more than you distrust churches, IMO.

And give them psychological tests before they enter preacher school

SBC is very loose collection of churches, the national (or state) organization has no say in the individual day to day administration of churches. It does not operate like the Catholic Church. 99.99% of regular attendees of baptist services couldn't tell you who the SBC president is.

Why are not victims reporting this to 5-0?

Churches should not investigate sexual abuse.

They should call the police and let the police investigate. If there is evidence let the justice system work.

I was coming here to make a better thread title and thread, but I guess I'll just add to this one instead of being exceedingly annoying.

This is upsetting having been raised SBC, but I can't say it's surprising. Sadly, I think it could be true that a lot of these folks in the upper ranks are no more Christian than your average Muslim.

It's all about status and power for them.

I say this sincerely: If you no longer wish to be associated with the SBC you might try the following options. And when you visit a church I recommend giving it at least 4-8 weeks.

Presbyterian EPC
Christian Reformed Church (CRC)
Presbyterian PCA
Presbyterian OPC
Anglican ACNA (reformed)
Lutheran (Missouri Synod)
Methodist (Global)
Eastern Orthodox
Roman Catholic
