They were on the strong side of the storm whether it hit them directly or whether it hit all the way up to Crystal River. They were going to get an incredible amount of surge and wind even if there wins only got to 65 or 70 mph.

I've been reading a Naples FL subreddit and while they got a big surge it only extended a few blocks beyond the beach. Areas further back didn't flood and most never lost power.

You can have all the plans you want but if someone doesn’t want to leave you can’t legally make them. All the mandatory evac does is put your survival solely on yourself for staying. Means there will be no emergency resources to rescue you should you need. Definitely sad but these people made their choice and I don’t fault them one bit.

I dont know dick about the geography of the region, outside of the obvious you can draw from a map.

It’s always the city next door that’s not prepared because the Media only seems to care about the big shiny cities that get them ratings

A HUGE part of this is the way the media (news channels and especially the Weather Channel) have sensationalized even tropical storms and depressions as being potentially catastrophic in order to garner more viewers. After a few times of this happening, people start seeing it as "the boy who cried wolf" and they are more than a little skeptical when it comes to being told by so many media sources that the big one is coming.
Accurate reporting, and media avoiding the desire to be so alarmist, might actually reverse this tendency to try to ride out a storm among the residents of areas that are in the cone of probability of a major hurricane.

Maybe if the media hadn’t established itself as an incompetent and biased group of known liars people wouldn’t question their motives everytime they asked a question. The distrust and cynicism towards the media is 100% the media’s own fault. The general public bears zero responsibility.

Meh. I dont think thats as big of an issue as people make it out to be. It is really annoying though.

Ok, lets use this storm as a test case. On Monday, the NHC (two days from landfall) had the storm brushing Tampa and going just north. The resulting surge from that path would have been catastrophic.
What should the media say about that?
Is it inaccurate to report the official path and what would result from it?
By Tuesday, a day out, it became clear who was going to get hit. It was reported that way.

Not the entire west coast sure, but you are a fricking idiot if you live on the water or your home is under 15 ft from sea level within 1/2 mile of the beach to stay. If you are in an upper level condo likely not a big deal either.
But there’s tons of idiots that stay that live just 5-10ft from sea level just a block from the beach. Just go inland a couple miles to a friends house.
Furthermore, this storm was never threatening the east coast. I’ve heard over and over and over ‘there’s no where to go’. That’s complete BS. Just go straight east to Daytona, Ft Lauderdale, etc. There’s not a lot of roads, but there’s plenty.
Not evacuating when living in certain areas is stupid. Plain and simple, no excuse. If you can’t afford to evacuate then frankly you shouldnt be living that close to the water.
