subtle "I'm unemployed now but might have an interview soon" brag.

This is not entirely true. While Shell wants to reduce their carbon footprint(sell refineries like Martinez), I don't believe they are going to sell ALL of their refineries. One big advantage Norco has is it is an integrated refinery and chemical plant. Shell wants to remain in the chemical business and the refinery is a feedstock for the two ethylene plants. Shell also views Norco, Convent, and Mobile(to a lesser extent) as one integrated refinery/chemical plant. At least that is what they are saying now.

This is 100% true.

Not sure if you’re aware but they typically hire a class of 15-25 operators.
They’ll probably interview about 100 people. And there was probably about 2000 applicants.
Just because you have an interview doesn’t mean you’ll get an offer

I have 2 family members that work for each. Both are operators. Valero guy definitely makes a higher base pay. 401k for Shell graduates to 10% after 10 yrs. Valero is 7% from day 1. Valero offers a pension. Shell none. If you take an operations job at Valero you will be required to on the ERT for 2 years. Comrodery are about the same at both. Neither seems to bitch more than the other.

I took down a refinery for Shell in the Los Angeles area in the early 90's. Regs got really whacko in CA around 1990 for refining. Shell opted to import fuels from its Singapore refinery rather than double capital investment required to operate in CA. The plan back then was to get completely out of CA. FWIW, also taken down was the chemical plant that made ethanol (SD Alcohol} for Scope, using ethane from the cat cracker. Thanks to Shell I had a beach side apartment for 2 years.
I much preferred working with Shell than Exxon. They were much more practical from a contractor's point of view.
Shell Chemical bought the refineries in St. Rose, Saraland (Mobile) and Yabucoa, Puerto Rico around 2000 to supply its ethylene cracker in Norco with naphtha feedstock. That market changed with the now 70 year old technologies, hydraulic fracturing and directional drilling, being augmented by geosteerable drilling for the accuracy needed for tight shale drilling. Yabucoa shutdown a decade ago, Saraland switched to Shell Refining. They tried to turn St. Rose into fuels with upgrades but uneconomical so closed (originally Enjet which went bankrupt). Probably going to be demolished due lack of economy of scale. I think the land was leased from IMTT anyway and why they got it.
Valero is also a good company but they are only a refiner and rely of market for supply of crude oil. They stay pretty flexible in buying and selling refineries as needed. Might not be a longterm job with same employer. Good think is that it is no longer known as No Hope Refinery as it was for decades while ripping off Wall St. investors, new unit by new unit that failed to produce.

This is true. It was part of Motiva's vision to tie NORCO and Convent together. So they installed pipelines between them to move product back and forth.
Remember that while Valero is refining, Shell is an end to end energy business. They pull it out the ground, sell or refine, and move product to the commercial outlets. The refineries serve a bigger business purpose than just turning crude oil into commercial fuels

Shell does indeed offer a form of a pension.
Their stock purchase plan is pretty good too.
