quote:what type of o&g guys are you talking about? If rig hands, yeah. But when I think of o&g folks i think of offshore operators. I've worked with both o&g production operators and chemical plant operators. The o&g guys were amazing at their job and great to work with. But it depends on the company, platform/plant, shift...
And operators are not typical o&g guys, most are not trashy, atleast in the LC area they aren't.
I've also worked with trashy engineers and good engineers.

Talking chemical and refinery operators.

They're a lot more common in my part of the world (geismar). The position is a foot in the door to operations for people with the right mindset. It's a great way for somebody with little to no education but a good head and work ethic to make a very good living.
The problem I have with it is the young punks claiming to make what the 20 year inside operators are making. A 24 year old working his first plant job told me with a straight face he's on track to make $150,000 this year about a month ago. Yea the frick right.

Can I be an operator with a finance degree and a bit of commercial construction experience?

I hate people like that. Doesn't happen happen alot around here.
And lets be honest, even at 40 an hour, you aren't making 150k unless you are working a ton of 16s to get double time and alot of holidays.

In the lake charles area they hire people with finance degrees but you better get some in plant construction experience to go with it.

Geismar/prairieville is full to the rafters with $65k millionaires.
Drives me nuts. They genuinely believe they made a better life decision than I did and are compelled to subtitly and sometimes blatantly remind me they did.
My whole family is full of career plant operators and they all disagree, so frick the punk dumbass kids.

Operators starting pay working 40 hrs/week is not even close to 6 figures. Sure they can work 3 turnarounds a year
Who works three turn arounds a year as an operator? There would be no production. Therefore, no job.

Calm down. 65k is a base number without built in OT, bonuses, and variable OT.
At a decent company, OPs are making 80+, easily.

People getting confused how a operator makes over 100k. You have to factor in the built in overtime on each 2 week pay check. As well as holiday pay days through out the year and of course your yearly bonuses these companies give out every year. I'm a operator it's not made for everybody but I'm blessed to have a good paying job that can support my family. I don't brag about being a operator it's just my job doesn't define me as a person. But they are very good jobs. But for what it's worth since some of y'all say it's not worth a 100k for all the hours they work most operators are making well over the 100k mark with very little overtime some of them guys base is around 80k ,I'm not top paid yet but been over 100k around end of October.

The guy you see sitting in the truck reading the paper is me and I'm glad you went to college too. Somebody has to pay all those taxes and invest in all those bonds so I can read my paper and draw my check

Bottom line is this... if a company is hiring 25 people and receive 3000+ applications, chances are that this is indeed a good job.
I talk with a lot of operators in my job and in my experience they are good people, though the plant culture has much to do with how helpful or lazy they are.
