Yep. My father has been an operator at Dow for 26 years now. He just called in sick for the first time in 26 years the past 3 days because the shift work has caught up to him so badly that he is in excruciating pain and in and out of the ER. He has been unable to keep down much food since October.

Doctors have done everything. It is flat out stress, fricked up schedule, and anxiety because he hates his job so much and the specific area he works for keeps changing hands and he's so worried to lose the retirement setup he has.

We are begging him to early retire (he became eligible last month).

My brother was considering doing it because he saw that we always did well (my dad is insanely good with saving, investing, etc.), but my dad refused to let him.

The people I know who work those schedules seem to be at about a 50% divorce rate.

Luckily, my parents are the best of friends and still extremely happy.

I have a family member kinda of like that always talking about what he makes without a degree but working 70 hours a week to do it. He is also always traveling somewhere to make it. People like that will hit the unemployment line many times in their life and have to sell their shite when they get laid off to make ends meet.

I don't understand why someone would brag about having less education.

Roscoe didn't want to eat next to the other one for whatever reason, so I separated them last night so they would eat.

It's funny because as much as these positions are talked about here I had never heard of them until the OT

He told me, "Man I'm going to make 6 figures and I didn't waste my time in college like you." I know that most operators make 6 figures but damn it aggravates me when ignorant people try to throw the, I didn't go to college and I still make 6 figures crap. Congrats. He also said, "when we are 40 I'll be making more a year than you." Stuff aggravates me. I just say okay, but it aggravates me.

Worked construction during the summers and always caught shite about some 18 year old making $20-smothering an hour while I was a school.

Bothered me a little, but to each their own. I Worked a lot of different jobs before going back to school. I'm doing something I enjoy and getting paid well for being a year out of school. sounds like the real problem is your taste in friends.

It's the chemical side. They are probably killing it with these oil prices

This

Also, I deal with Shell completions 90% of the time. I'd take an operators job w/ Shells any day. Yes there are morons but idk if the good ppl of the OT realize how great these jobs are.

People that don't go to college sometimes feel insecure about it. Sounds like this dude has some insecurities about his intelligence and is focused on the dollar as a defense mechanism.

Hopefully as you get older you drop stupidity like that, sadly some people stay insecure and uncomfortable in their own skin until they die.

Operators starting pay working 40 hrs/week is not even close to 6 figures. Sure they can work 3 turnarounds a year and make much more but who the hell wants to work 7 12's for 3 months at any time of the year. I work 40 hrs/week max and make a comfortable living. I grew up with a plant worker dad who is retired now and he tells me that if he could do it all over again he would take a staff job earlier in his career he missed so much with me and my 2 brothers working shift work.

He may make a lot more money than me, But I am A way cooler person and probably have more true and genuine people around me............

We are doing Christmas this Sunday because of that..

He was around plenty enough and I don't feel like he missed too much -- but I also give zero shits about holidays or special occasions. If I did, I would probably feel that he missed a lot as well.

The great thing is that his vacation time always went to long vacations as a family. I always am taken aback when I meet someone who has never been anywhere beyond Destin with their parents.

I've mentioned this before. It was very eye opening for me when I went to work in a plant and some of my first projects were hourly payroll reports. This place was epitome of union arse-raping with their perks(I can share them all but one big WTF one was DOUBLE PAY on Sundays). I remember doing a quick MS Access query to see where my salary fell in with others(I calculated annual salary for hourly folks) in the facility.
Humbling to say the least when you are 2 yrs out of college and wondering why the frick you're paying student loans and even bothered with getting degrees.

But 13 yrs later, frickkkkk that shite. I like 40 hr weeks, my weekends off. enjoying holidays and shite like that.

Tell your friends they're being hired because they'll do the same job for less than money than the guy who is 40 and just got laid off.

Ahh Roger that. Roscoe is a frickin retard. Seriously something wrong with his wee brain. He does have cat Aids but he's a lovable fricker so we got him all dr'd up and healthy so he could come around the kids.

I just didn't want some stupid racoons to break your bowls.

This is why those of us not working on O&G have little sympathy when oil prices lag because folks in that industry make bank when prices are higher, but complain when they go down.
