SF Bay Area Deli Under Fire For 'Send Her Back' Discount

CLAYTON — The owner of an East Bay deli is getting blowback after writing on Facebook that customers could get a free side if they repeated the controversial "send her back" chant that erupted at a recent President Trump rally.

"Meatballs made with beef today in case we offend any of our overly sensitive pork haters!! Free side when you say send her back! #canesasbrooklynheros," John Canesa, the owner of Canesa's Brooklyn Heros in Clayton, wrote on his personal Facebook page.

Supporters of President Trump chanted "send her back" at a North Carolina rally last week as he criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota congresswoman who was born in Somalia.

"I don't think that's a good political thing to say and from a business point, definitely not a good thing to say because you're going to lose business," said Michael Fuhrer who works at the Clayton Club Saloon near Canesa's. "I don't know why he would have said that."

East Bay Human Rights Advocates has condemned Canesa's comments as has Clayton's Mayor Tuija Catalano, who was born in another country.

"We all have the right to our opinions...but there is no place in our community for hatred and bigotry," she wrote on her Facebook page.

Canesa could not be reached for comment and his personal Facebook page is no longer available. He told KTVU that he's received threats since posting the message.
