This says a lot about you. You can't imagine putting others first or acting selflessly without having children?

Yeah, it says I am in the service of other people in a way you can't fully comprehend.

Sure, I can imagine i because I lived it prior to having kids and again when I resumed a more "Pimp-centric" life after they became adults. As a childless adult I could still be selfless and put others first, but it's not a MORAL IMPERATIVE and it doesn't depend on my mood or energy level on a given day. Having children instills a discipline and meaning in your life that those without children can never fully appreciate. It's the responsibility, the time, the totality of it, the emotional demands, etc. that give it so many layers of richness and meaning. Hanging with friends is great, but it's not what I am describing.

For the record, I don't look down on you for deciding not to have kids. I am just aware of what you missed in a way that you aren't..

It has nothing to do with freedom. Enjoy being a lone wolf and living a life for yourself. I'm all for it. I sure enjoyed it in my 20's and again in my 50's. Just don't lie to yourself that waking up alone being responsible only for yourself in a nurturing/commitment sense, has the rich payoff that nurturing children has. Or that it has the same element of humility and sacrifice. It just doesn't. When the weight of being a parent hits you, when you have that love, and when you have that commitment and focus, it's a much bigger thing. Whether you realize it or not.

I think a lot of people end up having kids either by accident or "it's the thing to do", then spend the next 20 years convincing themselves that it was the best thing to ever happen to them, and don't realize the full weight of creating a person. Having a kid is agreeing to the difficult parts of it. It's agreeing to have a kid with a severe, violent mental disorder. It's agreeing to have a kid who gets pregnant at 14. It's agreeing to have a kid who overdoses. It's agreeing to have a kid who kills themselves or someone else.

And what do you, the parent, get out of it? A ruined marriage? A kid that grows up and estranges you? Hundreds of thousands of dollars down the drain? Late retirement? A mother who hates her body and a father who "goes fishing" to escape the family he created?

"Well that's why you be a good parent!"
You don't know how to be a good parent to your particular kid in your particular situation, and you don't find out how NOT to be a good parent until it's too late.

Pass.

Yikes. Thats one of the saddest confessionals I’ve ever read. Sorry about your childhood and your shitty parents. Not flaming- being sincere.

It's a rare win for society. We need people like him to avoid procreation.

Wow.. excellent post, the whole thing.. i actually screenshotted it and saved it in case i ever get the itch to become a parent.. Seriously, you put into words many things ive often thought, and you articulated it well .. i guarantee that most of the downvotes youll get (not all) will be from the exact type of people you described in the first line of your post which i quoted above .

I heard his interview where he was talking about this. He said they get more joy from lying in bed naked, smoking weed, and watching movies than any parents get from their kids. Those were his words. But how can he know that? He’s never experienced having kids. It’s a foreign concept to him. He has no idea what sort of joy parents get from their children because he has no children. And seeing other people with their kids doesn’t give you the perspective of actually having kids. I use to think it does. But it really doesn’t. Only when you’ve had kids do you actually have the perspective to understand what it means to be a parent.

Having said that, he’s free to his opinion. If he doesn’t want kids, that’s up to him. If he wants to lay in bed naked watching movies, more power to him. If he wants to do that instead of ever having kids, it doesn’t bother me at all. That’s his choice. But as someone who’s done both, I can say unequivocally that the later gives you far more joy than the former ever could hope to give.

But to each their own.

This right here .

Many posters, especially LSUPimp, keep making these absolute statements that becuase THEY themselves think kids are “omg the greatest” that EVERYONE is supposed to feel that way, or be just as fulfilled from having a kid , or a bunch of kids, as he is… Yalls experiences don’t necessarily reflect the experiences of the rest of us.. maybe some of us come from shitty, abusive families and dont want to repeat that.. maybe some us think the world is quickly deteriorating and cant justify brining innocent lives into this cesspool.. or maybe we just want to lie in bed and smoke pot . …. What the hell ever happened to ‘live and let live’ or ‘You do you, and I’ll do me ‘ ?

No, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that parenthood is the defining emotional experience of a lifetime. It is love as a verb every day. To be loving and nurturing. To give your kids gifts of the mind and heart that fortify them and make them unbreakable. It takes you to wonderful places, where self sacrifice and personal honor and teaching ethics and mentorship and showing and affection and any number of things that are ONLY available through parenthood. You don’t get that way by living a small life of self- reverence. And you don’t get that from getting stoned. Not sure why that bothers you, and I couldn’t care less if you want to spend your life in a nihilistic daze. Knock yourself out. I actually thank people this self- limiting that have trouble adulting, or that are self medicating every day most sincerely for NOT procreating. Not every rocket launches . There are duds.

Two points:
1. That guy is remarkably immature.
2. That guy should definitely not have kids.

Penrod my brother, these guys are taking my comments personally. I have to say I’m surprised at the depths of the hopelessness. Its really depressing that the idea of beauty and serendipity and magic that parents can give to their children isn’t translating here. Like for me to pass the music gene down to my kids has been the joy of a lifetime . So I think of joy and they talk of drugs and suicide . And of course it makes me reflect on how badly some of these guys must have suffered as children. My dear friend for instance had a depressingly abusive childhood and he and his sister both chose not to have kids. Which has a certain logic but also ended the family line and has left them lonely in older age.

*You know who you are, childless former friend. I am NOT NOT NOT talking about you.
