proactive policing.

proactive about what?

In simple terms, harassing the shite out of citizens in hope for a reason to find something illegal. Rolling stops, turn signal infractions, etc.

i only have one issue with proactive policing. DUI checkpoints. To me that is unconstitutional.

If she sits there, is respectable, and doesn't try to leave, nothing happens. Its the "frick the police" attitude. Sucks she even got pulled over but dont try to leave when an officer is clearly talking to you. Thats just common sense that doesnt apply to kids these days.
Do whatever the officer says because if not, and he abuses his powers, that's on you!!!

So absurd.

I expect them to act professional and not be assholes but I am just not going to give them a reason to make me an example of how they can abuse their authority.

How many rights can you violate before people get fed up?

I think people are fed up. The problem is though for every video you see of cops violating our rights you see just as many videos of criminals doing things to cops that put them on edge. Guys getting pulled over for minor traffic violations that shoot cops for example.

Maybe the way to stop the brutality is to teach people to respect police rather than to be combative...it would probably lessen the number of bad interactions with cops.

Which is smart, but ought to be completely unnecessary outside of a Third world country.

Instead, more often than not, we get people on this forum suggesting citizens ought to behave around LEO the same way they do around pissed of 2 year old's if the 2 year old also held a pistol and had the authority to shoot you if they felt threatened in any way. Just...no.

Call me contrary, but somewhere deep down inside me I have a problem with going along with that.

Or possibly redefine the scope of law enforcement so it doesn't negatively affect so many citizens.

It's not the individual cop that's to blame for the negative climate in this country. The whole system is fricked up.

ok so how do you fix it?

I know you have some respect for Alaskan troopers...what separates them from other police? I think I know the answer and its they have tougher requirements and get better candidates than city/local PD get.

This is true. Or was true, it's changed just a bit. Troopers generally have very good people skills because they have to work with the native communities which is a very difficult task. Most are very down to earth and don't see the public as the enemy.

It's being changed. Alaska recently passed criminal justice reform which will revolutionize policing and the way we deal with non violent criminals. It's basically the first state to end the "war on drugs."

quote:

Decreasing oil revenues have left Alaska facing a massive budget shortfall. The state has looked at all sorts of ways to cut costs, including slashing spending on roads, schools, and boats. Its newest plan could save almost half a billion dollars, and it’s drawing support from both the left and the right. The savings would come from a surprising place: The state will help some people avoid serving prison time.

For decades, politicians have all stripes have competed to be “tough on crime.” But now, in Alaska and other conservative states across the nation, difficult finances have led politicians to another conclusion: Prisons are expensive, and programs to reduce their populations can save states a lot of money. In Alaska, criminal-justice reform, long pushed by liberals who don’t like the way people are treated in the system, is now a favorite cause of fiscal conservatives.

“The budget situation has put this into the ‘we-got-to-do-this’ category,” said Alaska State Senator John Coghill, who has spearheaded the criminal-justice-reform efforts. “We can’t afford to keep doing it the way we used to.

When it comes to crime rate, the US is up there but comparable to countries like Ireland, France, Russia.

When it comes to imprisonment, no one can touch us

Not really. Some villages are dry, their choice. But many of them have started repealing their alcohol bans. All were native villages. The State has nothing unusual on the books about alcohol.

Can't believe you are comparing the criminal justice "system" (used for your enjoyment) in Alaska to the continental US. Apple meet orange.
