Planning on selling my car, someone who owns a dealership in houma wants to buy it. long story short, it has some issues, and in doing so i'm listing it cheap.

The last time we sold a car was back in 2013 and we had a bill of sale and it was notarized, but it was to someone who planned on driving it. This guy, plans on repairing it and putting it on his lot or stripping it for parts. He said he doesn't even need the bill of sale, just the title to be signed by us and he'll pay us the cash.

Is that still the case in Louisiana, bill of sale + notarized? I mean legally I should have one for my own just incase some BS happens my arse is covered right?

bill of sale does not necessarily need to be notarized, definitely get the title notarized

I would get both notarized

If he has a salvage license (maybe not the exactly correct phrasing) I don't think it needs to be notarized. Make sure you get the bill of sale and also report it to the state on the OMV website.

It's either salvage license or dealer license. Kind of confusing.

Title can transfer on back with either notary or two witnesses

even if you technically do everything required legally, the omv still finds a way to tell you you did it wrong

If you do two witnesses, one of the witnesses has to get their signature notarized.

The title explains the proper procedure.

Notarizing a bill of sale helps you prove you no longer own the vehicle as of that date. If something goes wrong down the road, it would suck for someone to suggest you forged the bill of sale with no notarization and you be unable to prove it.

lots of places you can call and set up an appointment.

they charge a little but you go in with paperwork and walk out done with it and new real plates etc...... no dmv lines

both you and new owner walk out with it done and all the new owner has to do is get it inspected

highly recommend them!!!!!

If all you do is fill in the blanks on back of the title and sign the title over to him, if he never titles it in his name then the vehicle will remain in your name. I’d go to a place like ABC Title or someone who would handle the whole transaction. When dealing with selling vehicles, I have to have peace of mind knowing everything was done the right way. Only way to fix something that goes wrong when selling a car is usually the DMV and man I’d rather take 6 kicks to the nuts than to ever step foot in any DMV office.

Also, if you just do a bill of sale and he doesn’t retitle it, when you drop insurance on the vehicle, it will throw a flag saying you own a vehicle with no insurance.

if you go to notory get the title and bill of sale notorized, then go to DMV to pay sales tax and get your registration and plates

if you go to a tile transfer place they do it all and thats the best way to go. im not sure but i think the plates are mailed to you if you do the title transfer place

Pull the tag from the car and go to the DMV and turn it in and get a receipt. Otherwise you might get accused of driving an uninsured vehicle when you cancel your policy after selling the vehicle.
