Find somebody where it is docked to go out with you a few times to learn the ropes.

There are good sailing classes that you can take in Florida.

Get the Cruisers Forum app and learn all you can.

ETA: my wife and I have been Bare Boat certified for a few years now. Sailing is a blast.

That's definitely good advice, but what I'm getting at is whether this shite is actually self tending. If all we do is run around the boat fricking with ropes all day, it's not much fun.

I'm told it is self tending.

I have googled this, and there is conflicted info online.

To be specific, it is a Gaff Rig, not a .. a... non-Gaff Rig.

ETA- it is almost identical to this Alden boat.

Generally, just the jib would be self tending (no need to trim).

I don't think I've seen a mainsail that was self tendi

The main is self tending going into the wind, to weather, it is also self tending going downwind as a jibe but much more dangerous.

Can't help you brother. Sorry.

ETA: schooners are beautiful boats to look at, but only masochists own them.

That could be said for all boats, one way or another.

You are going to have to trim the sails but don’t worry it’s fun.

I saw a youtube about that, so you bring the sail down some, and wrap it up nice and tidy, so you are not full sail. Is that what you mean about trimming?

Trimming sails is the sailing term for adjusting them. Looks like a cool boat. You should take a course called basic keel boat. They will take you out in a small boat and show you all of the points of sail. There are only so many directions the boat can point in relation to the wind those are called the points of sail. The sails need to be trimmed, adjusted, based on your point of sail.

I think what you’re describing above is “reefing” in strong winds to improve performance.
