I was on Zoloft previously and I was an emotionless zombie. Effexor has worked best overall for me.

I loan stuff all the time when folks are out of refills. It all depends on what it is, how long ago you should’ve run out, how long you’ve been on it, etc….

Stopping antidepressants cold turkey is a bad, bad idea.

Not great abruptly stopping an SNRI. I would go to a local urgent care and have your medicine refilled if your GP can’t/won’t refill it.

I wouldn't say it was my idea to quit cold turkey. The bad idea was waiting until the bottle was empty to start reacting.

Ay boi, sounds like you're experiencing text book withdrawal symptoms from stopping your snri. I’d let your psych office know that you essentially stopped cold turkey since you ran out of pills without a taper.

I am not a doctor, but my advice to you is to identify a realistic goal to accomplish and just focus on that. Treat it like playing a video game but IRL. Embrace the challenge.

Nothing materialistic. Maybe its learning an instrument, a new language, losing weight, hitting 5 outta 10 3-pointers, going to community college, or getting a better job.

The human experience warts and all can be beautiful if you let it.

Thanks for being honest and letting me know that you're not a doctor. I appreciate you mentioning cognitive ways to correct how my brain functions. After several years of trial and error I found out that medication has made me way more goal oriented and has gotten me out of my comfort zone to try new things. I've done more awesome things in the last 10 years of my life than most people will do in a lifetime.

This. If you’ve built up any kind of relationship with the pharmacist and explain what’s going on he should give you a couple pills to hold you over. I did it all the time. Now if you acted like an a-hole that was a different story.

For meds like that, yeah they'll give you a few days to get you by. Just explain to them what's going on.

When was the last time you took a writing class?

It’s time for another.

I'm currently not firing on all cylinders, but I have noted the advice you've given.

Kudos for taking the high road in response to my remarks. You’re a better person than most of us that post here.

Effexor is known for bad withdrawal issues.
quote:

Is it possible for me to go to my pharmacy tomorrow and ask for an emergency prescription for a few days worth?

I have seen this, but it’s been awhile. Call pharmacy you usually get prescription from and ask them. Tell them about side effects of withdrawal, feeling depressed, and being unable to schedule appointment until next week. I would call pharmacy and ask right now. Also tell them how many days until your appointment.

quote:

When I called the psychiatrist's office earlier this week I only spoke with the receptionist. Should I have emphasized that I was out of medication and I was feeling symptoms of depression?

Is there a nurse or medical assistant? Probably not for a psychiatrist, but ask to leave a message or voicemail about depression and irrational thoughts problem for the doctor or assistant if there is one.

Surely office has to have a way for an established patient to communicate issues with a prescription or emergencies to the doctor and not just rely on next available appointment. After hours message might give options to leave messages about medical issues. I would also try that tonight. And then call office again tomorrow and follow up.

Say its not an emergency yet, and that’s what you want to avoid before your upcoming appointment.

quote:

so I may end up going to a doc in the box to see if they will write me a prescription if my pharmacy can't give me a few days worth.

Bring proof of past prescriptions. If they don’t want to fill a week (or less) of effexor they still might give you a couple of days of something for the anxiety.

With effexor its seems like it gets hard to tell what is withdrawal side effect and what is not having your symptoms treated. Withdrawal for it and Pristiq seem worse than for many other depression meds. I just looked up brand name for newer version (Pristiq), and effexor shocks or brain zaps with withdrawals came up prominently.

I would stop relying on the text reminders from the doctor.

Edit: to add I am neither a pharmacist or a doctor.

Effexor is an extremely dangerous drug to stop suddenly. You need to find a psychiatrist you have a good enough relationship that he/she will be responsive to emergencies.

If I just forgot a dose in the morning, I’d have brain zaps by the afternoon. It was not a good drug for me.

Wow now saban retiring killing gumps? Seriously, go to urgent care asap for a refill, that drug is notorious for withdrawals and can’t be stopped cold turkey

Pharmacy will just try to call office for refill, they won’t give you pills. Psych office or PCP should be able to call you in refill or go to Urgent care. You will feel 1000% better after that first pill kicks in

Call your psych office and let them know you’re having symptoms.

If they’re not willing to give you a short script to cover you until your next appointment go to your urgent care office and they should be able to write you a short term script. Then find a new psych.
