A suspect driving a stolen vehicle jumped from the Nisqually River Bridge after the vehicle caught fire on southbound I-5 during a pursuit Friday morning.

The vehicle caught fire next to the bridge and the suspect jumped, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Pierce County Sheriff spokesperson Ed Troyer says the suspect was seen swimming toward the shore. Air and water rescue units are searching for the suspect.

Traffic backed up for miles due to the incident. Only one lane was getting by on SB I-5 at the bridge for about an hour.

Seattle doesn't have a Loop either, BTW.

I would consider the 405 to be something of a loop.

Seattle's traffic problems stem more from its geography than anything else, though. The metro area is a bunch of rugged peninsulas, islands, inlets, and lakes surrounded on almost sides by massive mountain ranges. Everyone has to live right on top of each other in the I-5 corridor, and it makes mass public transportation obscenely expensive.

I actually love the part where the driver made it after the jump and swam to the shore.

That’s freaking legit!

I’m actually impressed

Don't forget the massive gated community known as Joint Base Lewis McChord that forces all traffic onto I-5 north or south if you you want to get around it. There is no other way.

BTW, about 100 yards past that bridge is the exit I take to get home and about 1/2 mile before that bridge is where the Amtrak train derailed last December.

405 is supposed to function that way. Also if I'm not mistaken this took place well south of Seattle proper, though in the Seattle metro area. The South Sound area does need a loop of its own, as traffic is bad here too.

I mean depending where you are trying to go turning off at DuPont and cutting through Steilacoom can get you to the north end of Tacoma quicker.

But pretending like JBLM has anything to do with “Seattle” traffic is dumb. Then again the OPs title should probably read “Olympia” catches a case of the Baton Rouge since the Nisqually bridge is nowhere near Seattle

I live in UP so I usually take Steilacoom to DuPont anyways if I'm headed south. It doesn't take any longer and it beats sitting in traffic.
