I think that it was Sound Shop...

quote:I was just talking to him when I read your post. The convent was not on the actual mall site. It was part of a huge tract of land owned by the Whittingtons, stretching from Johnston, across Ambassador where the strip malls are and going all the way to the river. The convent was apparently closer to the river and not where the mall is now.
Before the mall was there, a small convent of nuns was located on that property. Ask your dad if he recalls that.
He said that when he came back to Lafayette after law school, the convent was already gone. This would have been about 1973.

Never failed.. walked in the tool/outdoor department, and see all five employees sitting in the patio furniture shooting the shite and completely ignoring you
Sucks the store closed, but not surprised in the least

I have an old regulator clock from an estate sale.
It was "from the convent where the mall is."
It was "from the convent where the mall is."

They're full of shite. My dad handled every piece of paperwork involved in that deal. The convent was much closer to the river.

I don't doubt you. Maybe they said the "convent that was by the mall", it's been several years back.
Any idea what the name was?

So true! Several years ago I was the only customer in the tool department. Went to the register to check out. Four or five employees were nearby talking and I had to ask if one would check me out.
I knew it was a matter of time.....

He couldn't remember. Like I said, by 1973 or so, it was already gone.

Interesting. I was 4 yrs old in 1973, so all of that was before my time. Just relaying what my dad told me many years ago. Dad was
after the mall deal, because he tried to persuade his dad and his brothers to buy that land and do something with it.
But they bought elsewhere instead. Would love to tell you thank you for your patronage today though
Knew the Whittingtons owned it. Old Mr Nat (or his wife) just died a few years ago. Their house is a very non-descript house on Johnston.

We just sold our last building downtown. It was depressing.

Pro tip: when I order a pizza from deano's there is not a layer of grease on top.

The last two times my wife and I went to Don's, I saw your dad in there. He was not as depressed as you.

Sears used to pay mostly commission and most of the employees would stalk the register to claim as many easy sales as possible. It used to annoy me when the lazy fricks would try to hand off the challenging customers so they could go after easy shite
I think their pay structure changed a few years ago. Now (before the closing announcement) none of them probably give a frick

That's because he's way richer than I am.

This is still the greatest Christmas display I've ever seen. It was amazing.

I have no room to talk either. Same with my dad.

Sears has been awful for years.
Oh how the mighty have fallen.
I remember a Sears (70's) store in down town Memphis that often had an arc light out front on Saturday nights.
And those display dishwashers with the clear plastic door were so cool.

You know, I've lived in Louisiana my whole life and I've yet to visit the Acadiana mall once.
