This. And what I find ironic is that Sears was the Amazon of America before there was an Amazon or the internet. The Sears catalog was the way America shopped from home for decades. But for some reason Sears somehow missed the internet train and got left behind.

As a kid, I remember you could save money on shipping if you had it shipped to the Sears store. And not only that, there were also these stand-alone "catalog stores" where you could have it shipped there as well. It was like a mini post office but just Sears shipped items. We had one near our house.

I’m not sure why anyone would be sad about Sears, they are like the once great professional that turned into an alcoholic. They made horrible business decisions over and over. That’s called capitalism.

I still enjoy going to big cities that have huge department stores as walking through them brings back a lot of memories. But you have to adjust with the times.

Watching the video on Circuit City, one of the biggest mistakes was going down in quality and customer service. I mean, look at Chick Fil A. They are way above market price for a chicken sandwich , yet every one (especially yoga pants wearing moms ) loves them. Why? Quality and customer service. I’d probably still buy everything at Best Buy, if a soon as I walked in I had somebody waiting on me to help me find what I need quickly.

Exactly. Sears pioneered the whole concept of shopping from home. Hell, at one time you could literally order a freaking house from the Sears catalog....

They had virtually everything you’d ever need or want at one time or another. But when the digital age arrived, it’s like they totally missed the significance of what was happening. They were in a perfect position to become what Amazon is now if they’d have just seen the opportunity staring them in the face.

Just imagine if they’d have put their efforts into parlaying their already successful model of shopping from home and adapted it to the internet. Chances are the only thing the word Amazon would mean to us is a river in South America while Sears would be one of, if not the, biggest companies in the world.

It's not only the home shopping business that Sears pioneered.

Like Amazon has gone well beyond selling items to your home, so did Sears.

Sears created or owned at one time...

Discover Card
Dean Witter stock brokerage
Home Services (plumbing, electrical, carpet cleaning, etc)
Auto Centers that rivaled anything Firestone had
Allstate insurance
Coldwell Banker Real Estate
Prodigy (jointly with IBM)

It truly was old school Amazon.

I think it will be JC Penney. Their stock went under $1 today and they are losing tons of money.

We go, a lot, to the JCP in Lakeside Mall, and to others in South Louisiana.

They always seem crowded to me, with lots of people in the checkout lines buying lots of stuff.

Also, the stores I go to all seem like they are in good condition. And when I've ordered online from them, there aren't any problems.

I know they do a lot of discounting. Are they not selling things at a high enough price to make money?

Because it typically holds a niche on higher to middle high quality/prices goods, relatively speaking.

I'm not sure what the root cause of them losing so much money is but I don't think they'll be around in 5 years either.

In case anyone didn't see... they are closing 80 more stores, including the last Kmart in Louisiana. Also, there will now only be one mainline Sears left in the state (at least for now) which is in Baton Rouge.

I don't think it's going to matter. Sounds like they'll probably be liquidated by the bankruptcy courts

Very possible. I can also see Sears granting a bid deadline extension, ESL coming in with a lower bid that requires less financing (because they would be bidding on 80 less stores), and then once he takes it over, then in a year or two those are liquidating anyways.

Bid came in.

Still some work to do though. Liquidation is still entirely possible.
