Scientists discover a genetic link between cannabis use and SCHIZOPHRENIA

quote:

A new scientific study has linked smoking cannabis with certain psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia.

Researchers from Radboud University looked at data from more than 180,000 people as part of the study.

They uncovered that people with schizophrenia are also more likely to use cannabis.

More proof for you pot heads. I’m sure you’ll all ignore it just like you’ve ignored my warnings over the years.

“Our study showed that people with a vulnerability to develop schizophrenia are at increased risk of using cannabis.”

So the study didn't find that cannabis use causes schizophrenia. Just that those with schizophrenia are more likely to use cannabis.

An obvious follow up research project would be to compare the general well being of people with schizophrenia who do not use THC with the well being of people with schizophrenia who do use THC.

It might reveal a correlation with well being which implies a benefit to self medication. Alternatively, it might show the opposite.

I'd be willing to wager that's exactly what a study would find

That crossed my mind. If this "link" is real, self medication makes sense.

Not really a surprise here. It has long been known that marijuana is a gateway drug to other "hardcore" drugs. So it may not necessarily be the marijuana, per se, but the other drugs these individuals were introduced to because of their marijuana addiction.
