Likely due to the fact that the oldest get undivided attention in those critical early developmental years while the younger sibling does not.

just the opposite in my family, I'm right in the middle but when I was young, my parents were busting arse, working a couple of jobs each to try to get their business going, after it was thriving and they were pretty comfortable, while still very busy, they had more time for the youngest kids, not saying we were slighted, at all, just more time spent with the youngest, and they are lowest achievers out of the bunch

It would be interesting to compare mine.
Both straight A students their whole lives (with Honors and AP classes in HS). One is a savant with Math and Science The other is equally great in English and Social Sciences.
My guess is the Math/Science kid would perform better on the IQ test, even through they are both extremely intelligent.

IQ tests are being proven to be fundamentally flawed though, so the study itself is flawed. Doubly so using old IQ concepts from the 70s and 80s.
