There are schools who are not allowing kids to go out unless their parents sign a permission slip.

How would they partake in the experience without going blind without proper eyewear?
Didn’t we use a paper plate with a pushpin sized hole poked in the center when we were kids?

I think our school bought glasses for all the students. We had to sign permission form says they could go outside

It's sad we let people sue us to the point of needing a form to go look at an eclipse

They are worried about kids looking at the sun and going blind, I suppose.
Why, are they going to be masterbating out there?

It's kinda sad but I get it. Especially with the little ones.

s this what we have become? Schools ignoring a once-in-several-decades experience to avoid lawsuits?
There was a time when schools would use this as a learning experience to teach kids and let them experience something they may not get to otherwise.

It's frustrating, you'd wish they would have the correct glasses donated by a local business or purchased using government funds (no gotta pay admins insane money) and volunteers would help. It's frustrating that we are just dumbing everything down purely because of laziness, wanting to save every kid, and ridiculous lawsuits. Sorry, if enough protections are in place and your kid still decides to be an idiot, deal with it.
It's not just schools, it's society as a whole. So fricking sick and tired of having to cater to the bottom rung and pretend it's somehow beneficial.

excused absence if kids stay home to watch with their family Monday.
What?
This idea just seems funny to me. I can't imagine, when I was in school, suggesting to my mom staying home from school because of an eclipse.
I want to say there was an eclipse in the mid 90s maybe? For some reason I think I was a freshman in HS so 1993-94? I remember people who were in science class at a certain time got to go out to see it or some shite.
I don't think it was a total solar eclipse, but I remember one time there was a hurricane hitting Louisiana. The weather was pretty bad, we went to school and then school was canceled a few hours later when the weather was worse.. Today school is canceled if there is supposed to be some bad thunderstorms.
I seriously feel like an old man, some of the shite that is done today blows my mind. I understand the safety components of it, but it also makes these kids so sensitive. Everything is a big deal.

They'll be taking their afternoon naps when it passes

Dude, the last one across America happened 7 years ago. The next one across America is in 20 years.
Hell, the phenomenon happens somewhere on the globe twice in a year.
It’s not as rare as you think

Yup. Can you blame them? Way too many lawsuit happy parents, not to mention Karens out there.
3 months from now, tv commerical: "Were you or someone you loved blinded when they looked at the eclipse without the school providing proper eye protection? Contact the law offices of Dewey Cheatham and Howe to discuss your compensation options"

We did those stupid shoebox things. I never realized why everyone was so excited... seemed dumn to me.

Rapides Parish is granting excused absences and no outside activity between like noon and 330.

Reminds me of the lady that asked to have the 2017 eclipse rescheduled because it was going to interfere with back-to-school week.

More overrated, the eclipse or eating crawdads?

That was the only year I attended Hynes
Hynes in the 1980s was pretty unique. A lot of strong personalities were running that place: Mrs. Morvich, Mrs. Rivers, Mr. Dominic... Then you had that weird fascist-arse safety patrol with the orange sashes and badges.
I would like to see someone try and tell Judy Morvich that the kids had to stay inside for the eclipse. She would have laughed you out of her office and had you trespassed off of the school property as a menace to education. Of course, she would have had to call the cops to do that, because back then teachers knew how to manage kids without some clown armed with a handgun skulking around.
