Probably didn't have much choice. Alot of people dont have access to a computer/laptop at home.

Kudos to the district for trying, probably a lose/lose situation either way.

Laptops are cheap, significantly cheaper than cellphones. I fail to see why this is difficult for you to understand.

You can buy a laptop that can last 4 years or more that does everything they need for $350.

Are you saying that's way too expensive for even poorer American families?

Yes, $350 for something that alot of families wont really use reguarly is very expensive for poor families. Also most poor families aren't even spending that much on a cell phone lol. You can get phones for a lot cheaper than that

I thought they were being donated.

I think they did it in St. Charles Parish too.

This is a really weird thing for people to be upset about.

what's the alternative?
They keep the laptops at school and they are available to use during the next school year.

If anyone thinks these kids are going to use these laptops for anything educational, you’re a fool.

They’ll never see those laptops again.

Seems like a good idea. They should try to get a laptop to every student though. It's easier to protect the students while online if they are on managed devices.

Real world intuition tells me most of these schools are glorified daycares and propaganda centers masquerading as institutes of learning. The laptops are probably worth more than whatever "education" these kids are receiving. It's harsh but it's the truth.

There is very little truth in what you wrote, if any.

You should visit a low income inner city school one day . The students at these schools are no different than kids at any other school. Only disadvantage is many come from very bad hone life with little stress of education. It’s puts them behind other students in better environments.

A good bit of the kids at these schools are busting their arse trying to escape their neighborhood.

You would be surprised at the amount if very good teachers in these schools. If testing has failed it is with these schools. A teacher at these schools can bring up a class from 12% to 57% and get a grade of F and declared a bad teacher while a teacher at a better environment can have their class go from 98% to 92% and be declared a better teacher.

Reading these threads I can say that many have never worked at or visited one of these schools or ever interacted with students from these areas

SIL is a teacher at a low income school. I have a first hand source of how terrible conditions are at these places. There are teachers that don't give a shite, parents that don't give a shite which translates into kids who won't give a shite. Throwing millions upon millions away to "fix" this by attempting to make kids in a careless environment good little college drones will never work. Peel away the ones that DO care into a charter or voucher program via muh testing, and shuttle the rest into skills oriented programs instead.

Right wing socialists certainly won't go for this; we need to transfer the wealth to the billionaires instead.

Pretty sure all public school districts are doing it.
