Mine has always been the I-95 bridge over Susquehanna River. Just too high up, too long, and too much open space all around me to not contemplate hurtling through it. I once had to concentrate on license plate f truck in front of me with deliberate tunnel vision to keep from passing out.

1) Huey P. Long Bridge.
2) Old, rickety-arse wooden, one-lane bridge across the Big Sandy River near Kermit, WV.

On my first day driving in drivers Ed, the guy picked me up at Hahnville and we went straight to and across the Huey P at 4:00 on a Monday. Talk about jumping right in.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge or The New River Gorge Bridge in WV for me
I was a kid visiting relatives with my parents when the New River Gorge Bridge opened up on a Saturday prior to its official opening and let cars cross it. We were the fourth car that was not part of the construction crew to cross that bridge. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

The old Huey P. before they remodeled it.

I would rather cross a bridge than go into a tunnel.

Pulling a 14' trailer over the Huey P in the rain. White knuckling the steering wheel the whole way.

That's the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. It's even worse now that they took the shoulders away for a bike/pedestrian lane. I can drive over the Golden Gate just fine. The Richmond Bridge is double deck across one of the widest parts of the bay, that's the scary one. I fly into SFO now to avoid it. Even though I like Oakland Airport way better than SFO. Have flying anxiety too! Started around the same time as the bridge phobia. It's like a form of claustrophobia. You are trapped and feel like you have no control.

developed a debilitating fear of bridges in my 40's...first major panic attack occurred on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
I mentioned earlier in the thread that I developed this same fear suddenly, with no apparent cause.
Several others have indicated the same phobia. I take a little comfort in knowing Im not the only one that will drive an hour out of the way or just stay home to avoid certain bridges.
PSA: I learned a few coping tactics if I find myself on a bridge and freak out:
- don’t hold your breath, continue to try and breath normally - singing or talking to yourself can help you keep breathing
- don’t grip the steering wheel tightly, keep a loose grip
- upon approach pick a target speed and try to stay with it - knee jerk reaction is to slow way down, this only increases the chances of a collision

My butthole puckered every time crossing the Huey P Long.

The Huey P before they fixed it. fricking half size lanes on a grate bridge. I drove in the middle, no shits given.
I commuted the Causeway to Metairie for years, had a few extremely scary near misses. The worst feeling was being the last one they let on right before closing it for severe weather. I was fully puckered for 24 miles.

Mine would be some blue bridge crossing the Ohio just north of Paducah KY. You could see through the floor of the damn thing because it was a grid. Didn’t see it until you went around a curve and then there was no backing out. I bet there wasn’t an inch between my side view mirror and the 18 wheelers I was meeting. I’ve been over a lot of bridges but this one freaked me out.

Never found the new bridges that scary but as far as the pnw goes the Astoria-Megler Bridge over the Columbia freaked me out a little.

I drove that bridge but couldn't exactly where in the PNW it was until your post.

Hana was a blast, but yes that road is sketchy as hell and the locals all drive like complete lunatics.
I actually drove around the northwest side from the Ritz down to town the day before, when I told someone they freaked out that a non-local would take that route. I would say it was similar, slightly more sketchy than Hana but a lot shorter drive. We had a rental wrangler but lots of little shitbox cars cruising those routes. Locals all drive tacomas.

First time that I ever drove over the Israel Lafleur bridge was at night. I wasn’t expecting that curve in the road.

I used to drive that bridge often. I think the hang up a lot of people have with it is that there are no shoulders and the guardrail just doesn't look sturdy for as high up as it was. I don't know if it's still the case, but once upon a time the state of Maryland actually employed people to dive the cars across for people too afraid to drive themselves.
