Concerning resignation letters, my friend Ralph (not his real name) understands this process when dealing with his direct supervisor.

However, for those of you that also have a dotted line report to a CFO, CEO, COO or a person that works alongside your boss, how do you say good-bye to them?

Should they be copied on e-mail resignation letter (after either meeting face to face with boss or setting up conference call considering locations)? Or do you write a separate e-mail to all that are involved?

In Ralph's situation, he has one direct report and about 10 indirect reports (involved with REITs and asset managers), some he cares greatly for and some that if he doesn't speak to tomorrow would not upset him.

I have always tried to thank everyone face to face if possible when leaving even if I didn't want too because you never know what the future holds. Bad Karma is real and will bite you. Now when I retire and know its really over if there are a couple people particular still around I don't know if I will be able to hold it back.

I would only send the official letter of resignation to my official boss...everyone else would receive a quick phone call or face to face visit...

A good touch is to send a thank you note to those you care for and email the others

You either have grace, or you don't.

And, one cannot acquire grace.

You go written for the boss. It will get around quickly unless you are unimportant. Then they will want a sit down, exit letter. That's what they tell their bosses why they lost you. Always say it's you not them, you have grown apart ' just like a woman. Exit with class because the person that you really want to vent on isn't gonna be there in 6 months. Just my .02

Fact.

Don't be the guy that sends emails to everybody in the company.

"Aww, we're gonna miss you soooo much."

Not.

Type up the resignation, hand it in face to face. Face to face with everyone else that matters. Problem solved.
