Typically I take out an ad in the newspaper thanking the company and the community for supporting me during my time there.

I sent a resignation letter to my direct boss and asked him in the email and in person to direct it to anyone who would need it, which he did. Told them I was leaving for money, not personal.
They countered, but I told them they had three chances to bump up my pay to acceptable levels: when I started, when I asked after I got my feet wet and when I was owed a raise by contract. None of it met my expectations and I wasn't going to be the guy to twist their arm and squeeze them for money. They understood and I shook hands with everyone and left on happy terms.
Been gone 8 months now and I know they want me back. I plan on staying at the job I went to however.

I have always done it face to face when possible followed by a formal email. Anyone else you feel like you need to say goodbye to go around and do it face to face. I was once on a two week work trip when I got offered a job and had to give my notice via a phone call which I did not like, but had no choice. Being unprofessional in that situation will bite you in the arse
