Is it true that the public has been uniformly wearing masks in South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong?

I do know many in Japan have always worn masks in public.
In the years past I went, I'd see a number of older citizens wearing masks. Not many though, maybe 1%

Wearing a mask is a great way to prevent someone sick from spreading the virus. Why would anyone think otherwise?

The correlation is that the countries you see people wearing masks in are familiar with these types of viruses and thus are more disciplined when it comes to heeding shelter-in-place and/or general 'stay the frick away from people' advisement.

Well if a sick person wears a mask and you are wearing a mask then chances are they can’t cough on ya. Spewing diseases everywhere is our approach. Truthfully,they tell you masks don’t work, so you don’t run out and buy them all up creating a shortage. Any level of filtration is better than none. Had we not sold ourselves out to China years ago we probably would have masks.

North Korea flattens the curve by killing everyone who has it. Those Asians are smart man.

I know so many like to give smartass answers (not directed at you), but if something as simple as wearing masks could get people back to work quicker.......it might be worth looking into.

Masks for everyone would decrease the spread dramatically coupled with just being all around hygienic would stop the virus cold. But that’s just way to easy, can’t make any money off that.

My theory::

Wearing masks helps, but we were told they didn't so that way there wouldn't be a huge run on them. So they would be available for medical workers.

Seems like all kinds of people are making them. Even if the general population didn’t have medical grade quality, it would be better than nothing.

A couple weeks ago radio stations were mocking mask sakes and telling people to just wash hands

When I lived in SK, about a quarter to a third wore masks in public (only in city centers)...moreso in flu season, but almost non existent in rural areas...

Bingo.

I stopped at 2 stores tonight to get some supplies and couldn’t help but notice two things. The first was how many people obviously over 60 out with no protection whatsoever just walking around like nothing is going on. And two, people in Target don’t give a frick about social distance. Like, not a lick.

Even before the corona stuff lots of people in Japan wear mask regularly. It's been used as a preventative measure against spreading germs for a long time.

I don't think it's the only factor though. Japan does other stuff that helps against spreading germs that is just part of the culture. Social physical contact is minimal, no one shakes hands hardly, etc.

Surprisingly though, not one person in my office has a mask on today.
