I do see the irony in Muslims collecting figurative art. Paintings of people were haram I thought.

I think it depends on the depiction.
Obviously, depictions of God and Mohammad are strictly forbidden. However, I believe depictions of Jesus are ok.

We had 4 exchange students from there in my major. They went to American University Sharjah. 2 of them were muslim and 2 were christians. I would argue the 4 of them were more "american" in how they acted and embraced our culture than me or any of my friends

Possibly.
Muslims recognize Jesus as a prophet. They also (unlike some Christian churches) accept His virgin birth. They just don't believe Allah had a son.

I think it's pretty bizarre and a bit ironic that he buys this painting while practicing Christianity is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.

Do you thing the Vatican doesn't have $450 million? They should have gotten off of their wallet if they wanted it so bad. But instead, they'll continue to hoard artwork and treasure for their own enjoyment. I picture the College of Cardinals diving into a room full of gold coins like Daffy Duck.
