They know exactly how they work----especially for crossing water when the temperatures are likely below freezing.

You are the one who can't think outside the box and come up with that simple solution.

Firemen do that all the time and is a standard thing in pond rescues when people fall through the ice. It makes it easier to distribute their weight across a wider area so they can possibly reach the victims.

They may have been looking for Sasquatch, but they died from exposure by being ill-prepared for the elements. It's not like they were found mangled and surrounded by giant footprints inches deep in the ground.
