Maybe this entire thing was orchestrated to screw initial employees out of equity payouts ?

If the goal was to make more money then they'd have let Sam keep doing what he was doing.

700 of 770 OpenAI employees saying they will go now. What is the board going to be board of?

Ilya, the most important employee left that allegedly lead the coup, is one of the 700 employees telling the board to resign. I also found it interesting that the "new" CEO has the title of Interim CEO. This story is not over yet. Will OpenAI get weak enough for Microsoft to scoop up the rest for cheap and Microsoft's new division will be OpenAI? Would the DOJ allow that?

The DOJ will be weaponized for government control over AI. However that happens, that's the path they'll pursue.

If you read the signed letter, you'll see that the board is attempting to destroy the company.

You also informed the leadership team that allowing the company to be destroyed "would be consistent with the mission."

That adds even more fuel to the fire that they've built AGI internally.

I don't think so. I think it's purely about Sam moving in a for-profit direction including raising funds for a special chip and releasing products while the other side wanted a slow conservative effort that prioritizes safety and do no harm which included fewer public releases.

Google is the "do no harm" example as they keep the best stuff in house under secrecy and unleash a super watered down version to the public that sucks.

Google's not doing that for altruistic reasons. Their whole business revolves around search advertising and AI in Search is going to drastically change that model in unpredictable ways. If OpenAI hadn't released ChatGPT most people wouldn't have heard of an LLM because Google had no interest in disrupting the status quo on how humans find information.

Also, everyone to Microsoft is not a done deal according The Verge. They are still trying to put the pieces back together at OpenAI.

quote:

The promised mass exodus of virtually every OpenAI employee, including board member and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever who led the move to depose Altman, means that there is more pressure on the board than ever, with only two of the three remaining board members needing to flip. Altman just posted on X that “we are all going to work together some way or other,” which we are told is meant to indicate that the fight continues.

Altman, former president Greg Brockman, and the company’s investors are all trying to find a graceful exit for the board, says one source with direct knowledge of the situation, who characterized the Microsoft hiring announcement as a “holding pattern.”

This is something they can turn into a movie. I think we just found the bad guy.

quote:

LeGate @williamlegate

Since some people *still* don’t understand what’s happening, let me introduce you to the “lead” member of the board - Adam D’Angelo.

Adam has a company Poe which was made obsolete by the GPTs OpenAI announced on dev day.

Adam was furious the board didn’t give him advance notice so his competitor could have a head start.

Adam manipulated the EA people on the board that there was an existential AI risk & that Sam had withheld information (he was bitter about the launch of GPTs).

Adam’s goal was a hostile takeover of OpenAI — all in a conspiracy to shutdown his #1 competitor.

Adam refuses to make a public statement because he’s busy lawyering up.

Adam was the ringleader behind everything.

Altman had a tough time, and appeared a bit disheveled a couple of days after the surprise coup.

A few days later after getting the fat new contract to come back.
