Ours is about 7.2% of our gross income.

We have thought about maybe getting a bigger house now that baby #2 is on the way (just found out, don't tell anyone), but we still like where we are.

May give it a few more years.

Also, don’t buy as big of a house as you can, buy the house that fits your needs. That’s what we did and the money we saved goes into a retirement account or into our vacation account.

Any particular reason why?

We make more as a family and have only a slightly more expensive monthly payment.

Living in a cheap area (Chattanooga) helps, lol.

Our mortgage is 6.8% of our salaries. That's about all you're getting jabrony.

If that's accurate, why wouldn't you double your payment and pay it off so much sooner?

We bought way less house than we could afford. There's just 3 of us and we don't need a McMansion. Our house cost 1.3x our annual income.

Do yall base that on just mortgage, or mortgage plus property taxes?

The only plus side to being old is no longer having a mortgage.

I believe the rule of thumb is like 28% of your gross income

That seems really high to me.

Agreed. Mine is at 18% and that is pushing it (IMO)

That is based on out monthly payment, so mortgage + escrow. So yes, I included property taxes.

My salary is 180k. With my SO it’s well over 200 but I don’t like to factor in hers for living expenses in case at some point things end.

I max my 401k, we max our Roths (backdoor), she pays 8% into TRSL pension, she maxes her 403b, we pay $2,510/month to student loan debt (Yay, Med School!), we pay $3,000/ month for a nanny, we put about $2,500-$3,000 into savings every month so I can make a big arse balloon payment on those student loans in 2020 and almost be done with them.

Plus our interest is right at 3%. We go back and forth about how long we might actually stay in the house.
