Drive through Birmingham. When you are about 50 miles on the other side start looking for something.
If you are determined to stay in Birmingham bring a gun and extra ammo.

You forgot the bullet proof vest, which is a must. Hope OP survived his visit to Mtn Brook, Homewood or Liberty Park.

Drury Inn on the south side is very reasonable. You also get free breakfast, dinner and 2 free dinner drinks. Right off 65.

don't listen to the people telling you to go to trussville, if you're on I20 going to the carolinas trussville is definitely not on your wya. I would avoid the west side of town (bessemer all the way into downtown, although staying downtown would be perfectly fine) but anything east all the way to the state line would be just fine. Also mentioned the areas just south of downtown like vestavia/hoover are very solid and safe choices.

I mean, can you really say that Trussville is out of the way, and at the same time say that Vestavia and Hoover are not out of the way?

yes, I can. If he's coming from the west it wouldn't be any issue at all to get on 459 and get off directly in hoover/vestavia. Then the next day hop right back on 459 to 20. If he's going to trussville his detour getting up there from 20 and getting back to the interstate afterwards is going to cost him some time. Not outrageous, half a day behind now kinda time, but it's not nearly as "on the way" as hoover.

The raceway and adjacent Birmingham Fairgrounds had a long history before the overall site's most recent (2009) leveling and redevelopment.

All my people are from Central Park. We grew up going to BIR and betting quarters on the cars. It's a shame what's happened to that area.

Keep driving. Nobody will remember a nice drive with a hotel stay over. They'll all remember the time you ran them straight through and made them pee in cups so you didn't have to stop.
