Ain't this sorta how WWI started? A Serb got shot by an Ottoman I think?

And a rise in nationalism globally and recent game-changing technological advancements that made the future of warfare unclear to military and political leaders. So yeah this is nothing like that.

Looks like the assassin wasn't expecting to not get blown away within 15 seconds after shooting. Looks like he was running out of shite to say.

The assassin has been identified as Mevlüt Mert Altintas, a Turkish policeman.

Seen a couple reports that the shooter was a Turkish police officer. Any truth to that?

ETA: Well that answers that

How plausible is this scenario:

1. Russia blames ISIS and uses this as a way to fully invade Syria to "destroy terror and bring peace once and for all to the people of Syria"

2. Russia attacks US backed rebels and kills US "advisors" embedded with Rebel leadership

3. Trump is now president and takes aggressive stance in his first global "crisis" to show he is no pushover like Obama. He cannot be seen getting pushed out of Syria and must also respond to deaths of US troops.

4. A series of escalations and provocations eventually lead to war with Russia

1. Russia doesn't have the military capability to invade Syria. They're fully extended just doing what they're doing now.

2. I could see this happening.

3. After Trump's cozying up to Russia it would be a major reversal for him.

4. I think it's unlikely, but the probability is not zero.

Turkey would offer warm water ports in the Mediterranean; that was the thought behind Russia acquiring part of Crimea, right?

Respectfully disagree. Russia certainly does not have the numbers the USSR once boasted but with 770K active duty and nearly 2M reservists they could become the world's largest military once more with a simple callup of those reserves.

For comparison, the US has 1.4M active duty members and 500K reservists and we were able to maintain our current miliary deployments and invade two nations of similar size and technical sophistication to Syria.

Agreed but after all the bashing of Hillary on Beghazi and accusations of Obama being weak on foreign policy his hand may be forced upon him...

Did they take the shooter alive? Did he get away? Kill himself?

"as long as our lands(?) are not safe, you too wil not be safe"
"stay back" x2
"i wont get out of here alive "
"those who took part in this cruelty will pay the price for it"

As far as I see from social media, Turkish people believes the policeman was a Gulenist and Gulenists are trying to harm Turkish-Russian relations under the CIA command.

Gulenist Wiki

I wonder which accusation will gain more traction that the shooter was ISIS or that he was a Gulenist commanded by CIA
