pretty sure if they tested it and it's actually as big as they say it is... we'd all know about it pretty quickly

I remember when the Mig 25 was first developed. Turned out to be about 1/3rd of what the Russians claimed.

The US found it to be a tin can with little technical prowess and the Russians were using over inflated numbers in their specs. However, the US also found it could take a beating and parts were dirt cheap. It may not have been a super spec'd aircaft but wasn't without it's merits.

Then there is no way you remember when it was first developed.

Misuse of terms, not developed - but in use when a Russian pilot defected and landed one in Japan.

Doesn't sound a whole lot different from our old MX's which carried ten warheads, but was decommissioned for more modern tech. Granted, Russia may be wanting to upgrade for a potential fight or just deterrence. However, I doubt destroying the planet is on their agenda. They would have to live with the aftermath as well.

One thing you've got to remember is for what purpose the Mig-25 was designed. It was never meant to be a "dog fighter" taking on and defeating other fighter aircraft. Instead the Mig-25 had one purpose, and that was intercepting high altitude American Bombers flying at super sonic speeds. With that in mind, the Russians built the Mig 25 to do two things. Fly really high and fly really fast. Those are the only two thing it can really do well. This is the aircraft the Russians designed the Mig-25 to go after....

One of the best troll jobs in all of history. We pretend to develop a supersonic bomber, they respond with a stainless steel fighter and 4 missiles, really unsuitable for any other mission than to counter this bomber we never built.

Good times...

(ETA: Darth - Jinx.)

And, it would have been okay against the hustler, too. I was thinking more of one of the experimental designs we floated from the base plane for the SR-71. We acted like we were going to develop THAT as a bomber. That's why the Mig-25 was spec'ed out the way it was and way it was really unsuitable for almost anything else, except maybe the B-58.

Generally when new fighters are developed and put in service, they are obsolete for what they were designed. During the cold war, weapons were evolving so quickly that nothing really was unmatched upon being utilized. The Mig 25 was thought to be a air combat plane by US intelligence which led to the development of better US fighters.

The B-58 was a nightmare operationally. It was extremely difficult to fly.

It was surprisingly modern in design and composition (for the time) - that, plus good ole American power - 60,000+ foot-pounds of thrust with afterburners (let's just say it wasn't terribly fuel efficient - like B-52s - they took off with just enough fuel to get to cruising altitude and refueling tanker).

True. When we first found out about it it scared the hell out of our experts. They thought it was an air superiority fighter just from the looks of it.

Seems like they had some issue with fuel shifting during flight. If I'm thinking of the right aircraft.

It influenced it's development but I think it was already in the works.
