You know that .223/5.56mm is a smaller caliber round than a 9mm, right? Rifles offer rifle ballistics and easier shot-placement at extended ranges, neither of which are "caliber".
9mm vs. .40S&W vs. .45ACP...matters VERY little. Shot placement is what counts. Most people also shoot smaller calibers more accurately, so to a certain extent, smaller is better.
