Russian prosecutors have launched a new investigation into the mysterious case of nine students who died in bizarre circumstances after disappearing on a skiing trip 60 years ago.

The seven men and two women set off on the ski trip on January 23, 1959. Their 16-day itinerary aimed to cover 190 miles and cross the North Ural mountains: Otorten and Kholat Syakhl. A search operation was launched on February 20, and six days later the students' tent, which had been sliced open, was discovered. The following day the bodies of Yuri Doroshenko and Yuri Krivonischenko were found just over a mile away. Lying by a campfire, they were both stripped to their underwear.

In the days that followed, three more of the skiers were dug up, including Dyatlov, while the remaining four were only found in May once the snow had melted.

A criminal case was opened but it was closed three months later having concluded that the "spontaneous power of nature" was to blame.

Some 75 theories have been put forward, according to the prosecutor's office -- including an alien abduction. Another suggests they were killed by members of the Mansi people, for whom the mountains were spiritually symbolic. Still others claimed the scene was staged in order to cover up details of a secret weapons testing program.

What happened to the Dyatlov skiiers?

I'm curious if they will release ACTUAL findings, if found to be something controversial...

Sounds like a really bad drug induced hallucination combined with extreme cold.

Yeah . The thing that I found interesting about this case was that the Soviet Government found it interesting. They would normally (sas) squash a story like this. But for some reason this one was weird enough to gain traction. There are a lot of podcasts out there for those who are not familiar with it.

Either they got fricked over by the weather.

Or one was a mule for enemy agents. Who silenced a few and let the elements handle the rest.

Or yetis according to that found footage movie.

I was always interested in this case. There’s some really bizarre stuff about it

Dr Vozrozhdenny stated that the fatal injuries of the three bodies could not have been caused by another human being, "because the force of the blows had been too strong and no soft tissue had been damaged".[11]

Yes, other than the strangulations, removal of a tongue and eyeballs, burns on the bodies and bruises and punctures the deaths seemed very natural.

I wish Hollywood would latch onto stories like this. Creativity in Hollywood is at an all time low. Comedies are not funny, actions movies offer the best scenes in their trailers, and the CGI on sci-fi movies is just plain embarrassing (given where the technology revolution current is).

This movie could be awesome with a few embellishments to the story itself.
