What about the Lockness Monster? The picture of the "lockness monster" was a cropped picture of a much bigger picture and what was believed to be the monster was just a tree stump.

After the Columbine shooting, there was a rumor at my high school that a couple of kids had been planning something similar for months. It spread enough that several parents kept their kids at home for a few days.
Of course, most of us just went to school and nothing ever came of it.

The infamous surgeon's photo at Loch Ness was actually a toy submarine with a head and neck crafted on it out of putty.
I remember it was used in all sorts of books when I was a kid as possibly being legit.

I remember being at a party and maybe 20-30mins before midnight there were people starting to talk about how they were concerned about the power going out, etc and wondering if anything major was going to happen. And I am just thinking "do they realize the whole world isn't on central time? So far there have been no problems around the world."

This was pretty common when I was in high school. One day there would be a fight between two gangs (its kind of hard to call groups of people from a small town "gangs", but there were 4 different "gangs") and by the end of the day the word was "it is going to be worse tomorrow".

Reports of Riots in Baton Rouge days after Katrina. Our CEO came over the PA to address this during the middle of workday b/c women were freaking out wanting to leave.
Y2K I worked for a S/W company in Dallas. My department specialized in getting new clients off legacy systems on to Windows/SQL platform. Many old employees at offices in rural Texas were shitting bricks over nothing leading up to it(worth noting we had to teach some how to use a computer mouse).
DTL on the loose. The white truck/white guy theory caused alot of misguided not unnecessary panic.
