Have you ever heard a rumor that wasn't even close to being true, but had people panicking?

This was before facebook. Many people still didn't have cell phones yet, but one night there was at least 10 police cars, with their lights and sirens on that passed in front of my house. The there was a rescue truck, fire trucks, volunteer fireman, etc.

All of a sudden everyone in the neighborhood came outside to see what was going on. As people started to gather and talk, there were cars passing by, people stopping to talk to people outside, etc. One guy told someone that there was a multi-car wreck and at least 5 people were killed.

People were freaking out, calling people to make sure it was them, etc, etc.. Turns out, all the commotion was due to someone who ran off the road... Had minor injuries.

I heard a rumor that OweO would change this thread title to make people's responses look embarrassing. I don't believe it is true.

When you hear that one of the guys you just sold drugs to gets popped.

For months, you just wait for that knock on the door.

ETA: Not that i've ever done that, but I can imagine the fear.

That there was going to be a terrorist attack on LA. Wanda Sykes told me, I told a bunch of people, and it didn't happen. Needless to say people were upset.

Yes, while evacuated for Katrina, another evacuee was going around telling everyone that there were 20+ levee breaches all over the metro area, not just the ones that were reported.

you see it pretty much every day now on social media because people do not know how to recognize satire or they just read a headline of satire and immediately share it

Example would be the "official letter" going around that the saints were being forced to change their name and remove the fleur de lis

Another example, an article from :channel 24 news" I saw someone share on facebook the other day that said some parish's water tested positive for HIV, this girl legitimately believe it when all she had to do was read the article and line that said it is believed to be due to the excessive number of "thots" in the area
