Roundabouts in the US (Offshoot of the Highway Exit Ramp Thread)

1. Are there any proper roundabouts in this country (with two lanes and not one)?
2. Would drivers yield if there were stop signs (instead of yield signs) at each entrance (as it is, all stop and completely invalidate the utility of a roundabout)?
3. These are expensive as hell (there are accidents ALL the damned time)
4. My lawn. Get off of it.

There will be one in Baton Rouge on the new part of Stumberg in front of the hospital once the whole Stumberg project is complete.
Lee Circle in Nola is two lanes. There are a few roundabouts in Lakeview along Lakeshore Drive, too. There's one right outside my office by UNO.

My experience in other countries is that a properly used roundabout is a thing of beauty. Traffic flows well through them. Yes, I'm talking about 2 lane roundabouts.

there are two mulitlane roundabouts by my appt complex. they are used for navigating the hwy on and off ramps. I've never seen an accident there, although I've almost rear-ended someone who stops at them when no one is coming a few times.

1. Proper roundabouts can have either one lane or two but the two lane versions are trickier to design. So the answer to your question is yes.
2. That hasn't been my experience. There are a lot of roundabouts here and no one comes to a complete stop unless there is a vehicle in the roundabout.
3. They are much cheaper than a signalized intersection.
4. Mmmkay, if you have difficulty navigating a roundabout, you'll really like it when they put a DDI in your town.

The ones in Juban crossing are 2 lanes, but they are so compact that it almost makes no sense. It's not like you can actually merge lanes in a 100' diameter circle effectively

Oxford MS has a few, and I've ran into them in Birmingham, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.

Never seen an accident on them in Oxford one damn time. The roundabouts are great and they greatly help alleviate traffic. I really wish we'd make a whole lot more of them.

I've been through a couple in the US. I've been through one in Annapolis. They just put one in Columbia.
Nobody knows how to properly use them. However, they're very efficient and I hope to see more in future road construction.

A multilane roundabout is only "proper" if the existing and projected volumes indicate a need (convergent volume calculations). That said, all single lanes should be built with the ability to add a 2nd lane to the interior if ever needed.
Stop signs go against everything it is designed to do.
Unless you have hard crash data, you are talking out of your arse.
They are more expensive in regards to ROW; however, they are proven crash reducers and have much less maintenance costs over time. In the long run, compared to a signalized intersection operating under the same conditions, they are far superior.
Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.
ETA: A properly designed multilane roundabout will have what is termed as an offset-left approach that eliminates right-turn overlap.
ETA2: Simpletons of LA are still having difficulties in navigating them properly.......fricking Coonasses!
