I don't doubt that Seattle is a great city, and a pretty safe city. And as I said, I spend most of my time on Vashon Island when I'm there. All I'm saying is Seattle has bad areas like any other big city.
I'd live in Seattle all summer if I could. It is glorious. But I sure couldn't stand the gloomy winter months.

That's where I disagree. It may be bad relative to some other parts but the bad areas are not LIKE other big cities.
What the hell do you do on Vashon?
jfturner212, you ever 599?

I really can't think of an area I'd be scared to walk around in.

These areas
I just hang out on Vashon. Grab a sack lunch at the Thrift-way and eat it on KVI beach. Pizza at Rock Island. Tea with the monks. Drinks at the hardware store. Coffee at the Roasterie. Love me some Vashon.

That map is relative to the local area, it's much more useful to compare violent crime rates between cities.

I understand the love. And I get the relative safety pitch. But you won't see my happy arse walking around those areas alone at night. They aren't that safe.
By the way, The Walrus and the Carpenter in Ballard served me the best oysters I ever had. And I felt perfectly safe walking around there at night.
As for Vashon, you could walk drunk from the Heights to Port Defiance dressed in nothing but 1000 dollar bills taped to your body, and you'd be perfectly safe. Hell, someby'd give you a ride and buy you a beer.

Guess we disagree but I'm with northshore in that there is nowhere I would not walk at night.

Mayberry meets Burning Man. That's Vashon.

I'd Ferguson, MO in relation to St Louis is pretty bad.

Been to Baltimore a couple times. Stayed in the waterfront district. Was told DO NOT cross MLK.
Meh B-more is different. Two blocks are nice then the next two are ghetto.

Hillsdale too
Absolutely. I let it out bc USA is slowly buying up those houses and knocking them down to build their football stadium. But you are right. It's probably the scariest of them all because there are only a few houses back there and you can be sure that they are unmonitored and up to no good.

Californians love to talk about how bad the central valley is. The central valley is so much unbelievably nicer than basically any rural area I've ever seen in the southeast. Californians are not hard (except south central LA which I'm sure is horrible.)
I'd much rather live in South Central than anywhere in the Central Valley. LA has extremely low crime rates. The difference in the area between now and even 5 years ago is incredible.

Saw a guy get stabbed right in front of Pike Place Market one afternoon back in the mid seventies. He didn't even know he had been stabbed. Some sort of homeless turf war thing.

Parts of Anacostia are already significantly improved. A lot of the crime has been pushed out to PG County.

Wallingford
My sister lives in Renton, and while obviously that's not Seattle proper, there are stretches in Renton and that whole corridor that are pretty damn rough.

Como, MS, which borders the Delta, is frightening at night.
I can't believe I just saw Como mentioned on this board.
Way back when, it use to be a somewhat charming little town. Has Sardis gone downhill too?

There are way shadier areas of Atlanta than Bankhead
